The MAC Players To Hold Auditions for "The SpongeBob Musical"

(MIDDLETOWN, NJ) -- The MAC Players at the Middletown Arts Center will hold auditions for its production of The SpongeBob Musical on Monday, May 8 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. In this musical adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series, the stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The play is based on the series by Stephen Hillenburg and the book by Kyle Jarrow, featuring original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I. The play includes additional songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley; additional Lyrics by Jonathan Coulton; and additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

The SpongeBob Musical, the fifth production by the MAC’s community theater group, will be performed on July 15-16 and 21-13, 2023, and will be led by Director Jim Devivo, Musical Director Nicholas Jupinka and Choreographer Samantha Amaral.

Participants must prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided or please bring tracks for your selection. To schedule an audition time, please email [email protected]. Rehearsals will begin on or around May 22 and take place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. Actors of all ethnicities are strongly encouraged to audition. AEA members may audition for a possible Guest Appearance Contract.

All auditions and rehearsals will be held at the Middletown Arts Center, located at 36 Church Street in Middletown, NJ (next to the Middletown train station). Free parking is available onsite with additional free parking available in the train station metered lot on weekday evenings after 6:00pm and on weekends.

Auditions: Monday, May 8 from 6:00pm-9:00pm | Callbacks: Tuesday, May 9 and Wed, May 10 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL ROLES

Patrick Star – 20-35 – Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless; a big softie. (Range: Bb2-Bb4)

Squidward – 30-50 – Grumpy, short-tempered, generally negative but lovable nonetheless; must move well and be a strong tap dancer. (Range: A2-F#4)

Sandy – 20-30 – A native Texan, speaks with an accent; intelligent, buoyant, very athletic.  (Range: A3-E5)

Plankton – 20-50 – His personality outweighs his small size; a diminutive firecracker; slick, scheming,  very greedy, but his heart is still open enough to learn life lessons along the road; must be able to rap and dance very well. (Range: B2-G#4)

Spongebob – 20-25 – Optimistic, energetic, innocent, loyal, sometimes hyper-active; (Range: C3-B4)

Mr. Krabs – 30-50 – Lives his life as a penny-saving, money-grabbing restaurateur; obsessed and volatile in relationship to his money; tender but misguided in relationship with his daughter. (Range: B2-Bb4)



FEATURED ROLES

Patchy the Pirate – The biggest SpongeBob fan in the world. (Range: D3-F4 (F5 falsetto))

Pearl Krabs – Mr. Krabs’ teenage daughter who is obsessed with the Electric Skates. Amazing pop belt. (Range: Bb3-F#5)

Perch Perkins – The town reporter. Informative, yet cheeky. (Range: E2-E4)

Karen the Computer – Plankton’s computer wife. Sarcastic, evil and devoted to Plankton. (Range: G#3-F#5)

The Electric Skates – Three rock stars who are gracing Bikini Bottom with their presence

The Mayor of Bikini Bottom – Doesn’t know what she’s doing, but if you ask her, she’s got everything under control. (Range: F#4-B5)
