(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- The Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Raritan Valley Community College will present Stories of Survival: Object. Image. Memory., on display at the College's Branchburg campus from January 10 until May 10, 2024. The exhibition, which is free of charge to visitors, showcases more than 60 oversized photographs of personal artifacts that were brought to America by survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides.
The objects—which can be viewed to help better understand their meaning and significance to their original owner—were photographed by renowned documentarian Jim Lommasson. The pieces include handwritten descriptions or comments by the survivors or their family members.
Many of the objects featured are common, everyday items—such as a baby doll, a young mother’s cookbook, and a wedding announcement—that have been saved by survivors around the world, including Armenia, Bosnia, Cambodia, Iraq, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Syria.
Stories of Survival has been created by photographer Lommasson and the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. The exhibition at RVCC is being co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of West-Central New Jersey.
The exhibition is appropriate for students in middle school and older. For additional information or to make reservations to see the exhibition, contact Program Specialist Michelle Edgar at michelle.edgar@raritanval.edu. Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) is located at 118 Lamington Road in Branchburg, New Jersey.
