"We tour every other year and this is the other year; we tour the UK every other year if you see what I'm saying. We were looking to come here and it just coincided with the 50th anniversary; it's difficult to know when the 50th is, whether it's this year or next, I'm not quite sure but here we are," stated Squeeze founding member, guitarist and vocalist Chris Difford as he and his band mates kicked-off their current U.S tour on September 6 in Amagansett, NY.
With shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on September 8, The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ on September 10 and The Met in Philadelphia on September 13; the opportunity to see these classic rockers along with the psychedelic furs is all within an hour's drive.
Difford and other founding member, guitarist/vocalist Glenn Tilbrook have kept the Squeeze legacy alive and well and with a new EP out titled "Food For Thought" and an incredibly talented and capable band behind them; they are more than ready to get to work.
"The band that we have now we have had for quite a few years actually; they are a really amazing bunch of people that love the songs and we love being in a band with them so, it's a good combination;" said Difford with confidence. "It's very difficult to find musicians that are that trustworthy with your songs. In some ways it's business as usual, we've got a 75-minute set in America and we're with the psychedelic furs and it's a full-on tour for six weeks."
"Food For Thought," he continued, "Was Glenn's idea to record a new song and to make an EP. We have been supporting food banks in the UK for several years and so we decided to go in the studio and make an EP and all of the income could go to the food banks; we've raised over 30,000 pounds or more now I guess. So, it has been a very fruitful and very worthwhile combination of recording and getting it up online."
The new EP has a couple of "Re-visited" tracks; Difford credits Tilbrook with their revival.
"Electric Trains" is a song that Glenn and I really love and we've done it in a few different ways but this one is much punchier than the previous and it really works playing it live. "The Very First Dance" is a very old track that we didn't pay much attention to when it first hit the album that it was on but Glenn figured out a way of revamping it and making it happen. So, we went in the studio and rehearsed it and now it's become part of the show."
So, with some re-imagined versions of what can be considered "Deeper cuts;" what can we expect to hear when they take the stage?
"We're doing the hits, of course we are because that's what people love us to play and we enjoy playing them but we are digging deep actually. We're rehearsing some pretty obscure stuff from the past and I think different rows of our audience appreciate that kind of stuff and so we are going to give it a go," said Chris in a matter of fact tone.
He goes on to say that changing up the setlist is also essential to their vitality; pointing out how doing the exact same show and material night after night can be detrimental.
"I can't say that we do (The same show) but it kind of keeps you on your toes and keeps you fresh (Changing things up). Going on stage is a bit like being in theater and to do your show every night exactly the same is like being in "Cinderella" or something. So, having the ability to put older cuts in shakes it up a bit and makes it fun."
Having performed at the iconic Radio City Music Hall only once before; what made them include it this go 'round?
"It was an interesting choice that we chose, it wasn't something we identified as being "Thee gig;" I'm petrified of the place, it's got such a big stage," he stated with a slight chuckle. "I think it's alive in New York and will be an interesting evening and a lively night. We played there once before and yeah, it's a big stage."
The tour has very few off days built in and a lot of back and forth travel; Difford says that being idle is not an option.
"We can't afford to take too much time off because everybody needs to be paid and we can't just sit around paying people and not doing anything. So, we have to work and although it's terrifyingly difficult and tiring sometimes; it's kind of just what it is."
