Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...8/25/22

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 08/25/2022

“Souls of the Innocent,” and the official distribution took place on July 15,” stated guitarist and founding member of Jack Starr's Burning StarrJack Starr as he discussed the band's latest release, the recording process and more.

The metal genre has undergone many changes since the late '60s when the term, "Heavy Metal" was first associated with acts like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge; it has evolved and splintered into categories such as, "Hair Metal," "Speed Metal, "Death Metal," "Thrash Metal," "80's Metal" and dozens of others. So, when Starr first made a dent in the metal scene circa 1981 with the first incarnation of Virgin Steele, the metal world was going through its first of many stages.

Fast forward to today and Starr has proven his ability to not only remain viable but to also thrive in the ever-changing environment that is metal and the band's latest release is proof. After lying low; how did this album come about and how was the process?

“Oh gosh," he started with a laugh, "It has been too long since our last record; probably about, I don't know, four and a half years or something like that. We really did the whole thing during the pandemic; we were getting together and we were recording and we were songwriting and so on and so forth and we were braving the odds and getting together and sweating on each other and breathing on each other but we made it (laughs) because that's right rock'n'roll must persevere.”

“It was the chicken and the egg coming together and it sounds really hard to explain but a lot of times a song will start with one person; either myself or the bass player and it could start with a song title or it could start with me coming up with a riff or the bass player coming up with a riff and then we get together but this particular album was a little unusual because we really didn't set out to make a Burning Starr album. I know it sounds a little weird but I'm gonna tell you, we set out to make a thrash album and what happened is; back in the 80s, we had made a bunch of thrash albums under assumed names; myself, the drummer and the bass player and so on and we did so just because we wanted to vent. We didn't want to play structured music where we had to come up with catchy songs and cool hooks, we just wanted to go crazy in a recording studio. So, we put out these albums and they developed a cult following in the thrash metal underground and we had this idea 30 years later that maybe it's time to do another one of those crazy albums where me, the bass player and the drummer basically pretend we’re Motörhead or some band like that and just go nuts. Then what happened is, the songs that we came up with were so good that each time we were gonna put it on this fake album; we said, no screw that! These songs are too good; these should be on a Burning Starr album and finally, it got to the point where there was nothing left for the fake album because we really loved all of the songs that we came up with. So, that’s the crazy story and you're the first person that I've told it to and I've been doing non-stop interviews for weeks (laughs). So, there's a harder edge to this album because it was basically; I don't give a damn, I'm doing what I wanna do and it was kind of a cool thing.”

Ah, so from the past came a new future and Starr couldn't be more enthused when he talks about the new record and the new label the band calls home.

“Yeah; it's 12 songs including a bonus track which was actually leftover from the previous album. So, it's 12 songs altogether and I think it clocks in maybe like a little under an hour and actually right now it's only available on streaming and CD and that's it. The physical format will be CD but I'm sure that there are plans to put in out on vinyl but the problem with vinyl lately has been that all these vinyl record pressing plants are way behind. So, if you’re a record label, you have to book like six months or a year in advance; I'm not really sure but I know it will come out on vinyl because I want it on vinyl because I'm a big vinyl collector.”

“This album is going to be our first release on Global Rock Records," he continued, "It's a new European metal label owned by a guy named Brian Adams not to be confused with the other Bryan Adams and it's because our manager Giles Lavery works with a lot of really great European metal bands like Alcatraz and Graham Bonnet and Girlschool. A lot of them are like 80s kind of metal bands and really great bands that are still around and so he signed us and then we signed with them; he said, “Don't worry guys, I'm gonna get you a great label” and he did. So, we have a new label and a new management company.”

There are always glitches when making a record; everything from studio time to creative differences can slow the progress of the finished product. Starr relayed a situation where the band had to, "Stick to their guns" in order to get what they wanted.

“The first song starts with this little minute long intro that sets things up and then it goes into the first song which has really insanely good drumming and it’s so very unusual in today's day and age and that's all I can tell you; it's not a click track, it's not drum machines, it's not samples; it's a drummer basically throwing it against the wall and making it stick; it's actually music. I'll tell you another little secret, the first producer of this album did not like the drums on that first song and he kept wanting us to re-record it; he wanted us to redo the drums and we said no way! The enthusiasm was exactly what we wanted and we stuck to our guns and we got a new producer. I heard something in those drums and so did everybody else in our band and we decided we were going to stick with our gut feeling and we just basically said, the producer is wrong, we're right, the drum part stays, we're not redoing it and we're not watering it down.”

"Not watering it down" is a staple for most metal bands and many push the limits in multiple ways. When asked what he thought of some of today's metal music and bands with indiscernible lyrics, vocals and melodies as compared to those of yesterday; he didn't hesitate to respond.

“Honestly, I can't really enjoy that kind of music. I like melody, I really like well-developed, well-conceived, well-produced, well-sung and well-written tunes and if you listen to the bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Queensryche; they all have that and that's what makes it enjoyable for me to listen to and I'm just gonna tell you honestly and I'm not saying in this interview that we made a better album than them but I can tell you with total certitude that we made an album that is definitely in that class. Ours is just as well-produced, just as well-played, just as well-sung and just as well-written as any of those. You have to believe in yourself but you also have to be realistic. I’m not saying that we’ve made one of the best metal albums of all time or that we’ve made a better album than “Screaming For Vengeance” or whatever but I'm saying that we’ve made an album that is equal in that genre and that's not easy to do either because you’ve got to have really great players and we have an insanely good drummer, an insanely good singer and an insanely good bass player and I tinkle a little bit on the guitar; hopefully the sum total will be as good as the parts.”

Perhaps this is overstating the obvious but listening to Starr speak and listening to his work, one can tell he is an "Old School" metal guy; so, how does he define his current unit and what are the plans to promote the new record?

“When people think of 80s metal, they basically think of the stuff that was being pushed by VH1 and MTV. They think of Poison and bands like that, Quiet Riot; which is fine. I'm not opposed to those bands but it's just not what we do. I categorize more of that as West Coast metal, hair metal; we're not West Coast metal we’re definitely East Coast metal and we're East Coast metal with leanings towards Euro Metal.”

“I think there will be a tour but right now there's nothing definite because I think we kind of want the album to write its own ticket and we'll know and everybody connected with the band will know what we're looking at probably in about four or five months. We're thinking that it is going to make a breakthrough for us and get us a couple of more rungs on the ladder towards metal stardom and that's what we want; total bigness (laughs).”
