Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...6/29/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 06/29/2023

"I did three months of solid work on the music before the tour and then another month of administration on visas, flights, hotels and the music; it was quite stressful and a lot of work but it is what we do," laughed a very jovial Martin Barre as he discussed his latest "A Brief History of Tull" tour featuring nothing but songs from that legendary rock band.

June 29 sees Martin and the band roll into The Newton Theater in Newton, NJ as they head toward wrapping up this leg of the tour which features many Tull "Deep cuts and rarities," something Martin says was quite the undertaking but well worth the effort.

"I've put a lot of work into this show," he began, "I want it to be something really, really special. I try to do that every time we have a new show but this one needed a lot more because I've gone down the obvious route. Highlighting the "Aqualung" album was an easy one, the "50 Years" came quite easy; a lot of thought, work and preparation has gone into this one but it's worth it and the result is more than I expected so I'm very happy with it."

Years past have seen Barre incorporate select Jethro Tull music into his solo sets; the tunes were usually selections he penned during his time with the band but now he has chosen to go full-blown Tull with the entire evening dedicated to his past. So; why the change?

"I'm a bit of a hypocrite," he said with a chuckle, "In the back of my mind I'm going to go back to my own material but it's the demographics really. I'm playing to a Tull audience and I'm sure they'd be happy if I played a half-an-hour of the best Tull hits but I just thought, this hasn't been done. The show I'm doing will only be done by me because the tracks are really deep cuts that are very rare but they are musically important, they sound great and people will know them. The reaction is that they are really nicely surprised that I'm playing these unusual tracks; they all have their own special place in history and they're far from the obvious. So, the setlist is probably doing the rounds on the internet but people are just so excited about the choice of songs and I get lots of comments saying, "If I had to put the set together, that's exactly what I would have chose" and that's brilliant; that's the nicest thing they can say."

"Yeah, it's very down to earth," he continued. "There is nothing hidden, it's very honest, very live and very representative of what Tull was all about; a really special live act who was a touring stadium band of the day and that music reflects it.I even play music with sequencers; well just one (laughs) because that was part of our history. We went electronic for a year and some people didn't like it but I've sort of rebuilt it all to make it really live and really exciting but it's sort of anthems of the day and it's great! I'm 77 this year so my musical tastes are very much from that era and there is not much around that sways me away from it and I'll fly that flag as long as people want to look at it."

When Barre tours, his stage performances are very indicative of why he's one of the most influential guitarists of his era. His guitar solo in "Aqualung" has been named on multiple "Top Guitar Solos of All-Time" lists and his ability is always on full display. Recently, he has been adding an acoustic portion to his electric sets; will there be any of that on this tour?

"Yeah but it's mixed in more because we play quite a few of the acoustic songs off the albums; I can probably count them (laughs), maybe just three (laughs) but it's part of the build up. I'm playing flute, we have keyboards; it's a lot broader sound structure of the band that lifts everything up. There's a lot of different sounds and dynamics going on and it makes it more exciting for us as musicians as well to have that variety. The band is the same, except we have a new drummer Terl Bryant and he's played with a lot of big people; John Paul Jones, Peter Gabriel, a lot of big people. He's a UK drummer and he fits in perfect because he's of that era and very sympathetic to the music. He plays inside the music rather than over it which a lot of drummers tend to do because they see it as carte blanche to go berserk (laughs) but that doesn't always work. So, it's great and he fits in really well with the music; it's still just the four of us. We are a really small unit, we've got a front of house sound which is obviously imperative and then we have a lighting guy; probably the first time we've had a proper front of house crew person on board and the lights are becoming a more important.part of what I do. I see this show in a theater with everything thrown at it, it's very visual. We have back projection, we have really great lighting effects, it's very visual on stage; changes of instruments and seques into the music, it is more of a theatrical show than I've ever done before which made it a lot harder because it's not just play a song, have a breather, tune up, chat with the audience, play another song; it's like bang, bang, bang, we are firing music at the audience. I have to work harder to keep up but it all ties in with the backdrops and the storyline that comes on the screen. The visual part is really strong on this tour. Aaron Ward who did the "50 Year," "The Aqualung Tour" has redone everything with all new songs and it's an incredible job he's done. I mean, it is really stunning; stunning visuals. I'm not interacting with it in a direct way but the visual content matches the songs. So, what's going on on the screen matches the storyline of each song so it ties in that way but there is no musical tie-in or any virtual Ian Anderson or BB King or whatever people do these days; all of the music is live."

With six decades of touring and Tull, Barre has more than enough material to satisfy his audiences; so, what do we expect in Newton and beyond?

"It is all Jethro Tull; some of the Tull music I wrote so, I'm in there but it's probably an hour and five minute first set and 55 minutes to an hour second set. I never timed it, I planned what I wanted to play. Every song that I wanted to play I mapped out and I've got some instrumental interludes that all tie-in and amazingly, it came out pretty well banged on two hours which is what we always try and do; not by design, it just fell into place which I thought was a good sign. This tour was a month, which is short for us and then we come back in October and we do some shows in the Northeast and then we go down to Miami and then we go through Florida and across to South America for a month so it's a longer tour. They are all great audiences, great gigs and the response has been absolutely tremendous."

Shall you miss the Newton show; fret not! Barre has one more Jersey appearance at William Morrow Beach in Somers Point on June 30 and either show is guaranteed to quench your Tull thirst.
