Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...5/8/24

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 05/08/2024

"I appreciate it, you stick around long enough, you develop a history," laughed piano player and Blues musician Dave Keyes when told about his impressive resume which includes names such as David Johansen, Bo Diddley, Marie Knight, Popa Chubby, Ronnie Spector, Ruth Brown, Levon Helm, Darlene Love and the list goes on and on.

Before we delve into his veritable list of "Who's Who," let's discover a bit about his history and how it has led to a long career in the music industry.

"I grew up in New York pretty much and ended up going to school up in Boston and when I got out of school, I basically went on the road, first doing Top 40 and then playing with a guy named Sleepy LaBeef, who was an old Rockabilly guy on Sun Records at the time. Then I came back to New York and started playing in the clubs and doing a lot of blues stuff, swing stuff; all kinds of music really, a lot of Country at the time too. I met and worked with Odetta from about 2000 until just about the time she passed in 2009 I think; her gig was unique, it was usually just me and her, just piano and vocal. I got the gig because a buddy of mine did her gigs and we ended up splitting them 50/50  because it was his gig and he kind of produced her last couple of records and I would do the gigs when he couldn't do them but I did European tours with her and really some other great gigs with her."

"I also did a lot of Broadway," he continued to recount, "One of the things I did was, "Smokey Joe's Cafe" which ran for about seven years on Broadway in the '90s and the last half of the run, I was one of the conductors for the show. So, the last half of the run they would bring in guest stars; we had Gladys Knight, Lou Rawls, Gloria Gaynor, Ben E. King; it was a pretty mixed bag of people They would bring them in for like two months at a time and it was a real treat to work with these people and it was a good show, it was fun to play and it was the music of Leiber and Stoller so it was a lot of Rock 'n' Roll and old R & B stuff which was cool."

Surely a man of his experience must be a multi-instrumentalist; or is he? Keyes' readily says, "No, no" but definitely loves focusing on the piano.

"No, I do not play any other instruments; well, not professionally," he said once again with a laugh. "I played a bunch of brass instruments in high school and elementary school too and I can play a little bit of bass but that's about it. I started taking piano lessons when I was around seven and I just enjoyed it. My mom was into music and theater, she kind of pointed me in the direction of piano and my dad enjoyed music also; not to the extent my mom did but we would go out and hear music sometimes, Jazz stuff which was more for him but piano, I just started doing it, it was something I really enjoyed, I kept at it and it has been something I really dig. Playing in bands in high school, you know, once you get the bug you can't stop and I love it, I love what I do."

Currently, Keyes is gearing up for another record but his last release, "Rhythm, Blues & Boogie" can be found on Blue Heart Records; a place he is glad to call home even though in today's music climate, the days of long term commitments from record labels are pretty much a thing of the past.

"There is this wonderful scene in Pennsylvania; Pocono Blues Society, Central Pennsylvania Blues Society; there are a lot of societies out there, kind of an outgrowth of the Pocono Blues Festival which was a huge festival for, I don't know, about 10 or 15 years which ended somewhere around 2015 or 2016. I'd go out there and I'd play and I met a whole bunch of friends out there and I met Sallie Bengston somewhere along the line. I approached Sallie, I was aware through a friend of mine, Vaneese Thomas who is a wonderful singer and who is on that label and I took a look at their roster, checked with Vaneese and she had only good things to say about Sallie and also Betsie Brown who is a wonderful promotional person and handles that for the label. So, that's how I met Sallie and that's what attracted me to putting something out on Blue Heart; labels, nobody is getting rich off this stuff and so you need somebody who will respect what you're doing and can help you and I really respect Sallie and Betsie go about what they do and it just seemed like a good fit for me. I think the economics are such, it's not like they are giving out huge advances where they can own you; if you are with a big label, they are gonna give you an advance or something and demand a certain amount of product and I think the business has changed so much with people controlling their own masters, doing their own projects; just looking at my own project, "Rhythm, Blues & Boogie," it's basically my project and I brought it to Blue Heart. So, it is not like the labels are paying a ton of money, so they don't own you so if at the end of that project, you've sold a boatload of records, maybe you don't switch around so much. You go with what the best situation is and that is constantly changing."

Although he has had his share of various gigs in multiple genres, Keyes says it all comes back to the blues for him; it is the "Foundation" on which his music is built but Blues music often flies under the radar until it "Cycles" back around. So; how does he balance his respect for the Blues with those other styles in order to get the ever coveted airplay?

"I agree about the cyclical nature," he said readily. "With Stevie Ray Vaughn, that was a whole flood of new interest, when Clapton went back to doing straight blues records in '92 or '93 whenever it was, that was a whole other cycle. I think part of the difficulty is that the legendary artists are dying, so there has to be fresh blood, so to speak. What "Kingfish" is doing is massive. He gets the thing on "60 Minutes" and suddenly you have a whole new audience. You mentioned women leading the charge, there are a lot of younger players coming up now who are energizing things both male and female."

"It's a tricky balance and I'm even at a little more of a disadvantage because I'm all for 12 bar blues but I like to bring a challenge a little bit. There are other chords in the universe besides those three chords and I think a lot of stuff that gets played on the radio is guitar driven and it's a tight market in terms of what is considered the blues and what is not and I'm constantly trying to stretch that boundary. I'm constantly trying to cross the line; for me it's like a stew and the foundation of it is always the Blues. That's the tree itself and the roots are kind of what I do. I branch out, whether it's New Orleans stuff; it's more about the chord changes for me and the subject matter is another thing too. I like to write songs about stuff that is my life and that may not be the traditional blues life. I put out what I put out and we see what happens from there (laughs). I love to boogie, the title of the CD kind of says it all. That's what I do but from there I take it and try to make it different from what the next guy before me is doing."

Pulling from his vast list of friends and musical acquaintances for recording help is an easy task for Dave and his latest record features "Bluesville" radio personality Early Times, legendary drummer Bernard Purdie and the equally well-known Doug MacLeod.

"I've known Early for a while and I had done a live recording at Sirius with him and his band and when I was thinking of who I'd like to put on the record, it just seemed like a natural fit, we had a great time playing together and he did a great job. I've known Purdie for about 15 years, we've done a bunch of things together and he's in a class by himself quite honestly, he's incredible. I had the opportunity to bring him in on four tracks and we had a ball. We did a gig at The Lizzie Rose Music Room along with guitarist Chris Bergson and a singer named Ellis Hooks, so it is kind of a joint sort of project we do and Bernard is special, he just kind of elevates everything so that was a no-brainer. Doug MacLeod, I've admired forever, we've become really good friends and I admire his sense of humor. I thought it would be fun to do something with him and so I called him up, I wanted to do a duet and he had the frame of a song, we kind of flushed it out and it was a hit. It is one of the most fun songs that I do in my live shows and it was just a real treat to work with him and that song is, "Invisible Man." That is basically a song about getting older and how older men look at younger women and think, "I can get that" and the women are like, "Sorry pops, you're too old" (laughs). So, it's that sense of humor that Doug is so great at and the people love the tune; in all three situations with the people I brought on board, I think they really added a lot to the project."

As the calendar turns from Spring to Summer, Keyes says he will commit to performing more and that he will be very busy as his schedule is heating up faster than Death Valley asphalt.

"I'm gonna play more," he stated with confidence, "I was doing an off Broadway show last year about the story of Alan Freed, I was the music director and basically led the band; if it was musical in the show, I was in charge of it (laughs). It was a great experience but you get a little sidetracked. You get so involved in the thing but what a great experience and Eric Turner was fantastic, he is an amazing talent. Now I'm getting back to getting on the road and to booking more dates and things like that. I'll be going over to Europe later in the summer, I just found out I'll be playing at King Biscuit in October where I'll be backing Benny Turner. I sort of move around a lot. I work as a side man, I work solo and I work with my band. We have some other band dates coming up through the summer and I'm also gonna be recording a new record, so there are a bunch of irons in the fire there."
