"I'm doing good, I took a little stroll around the neighborhood to clear my mind a little bit because it was South by Southwest this past week and there is a lot of stuff going on."
West Point, Mississippi, a town immersed deep in the Delta, home to Blues, Gospel and birthplace of singer, songwriter, rocker JM Stevens. Currently, Stevens calls Austin, Texas home and often finds himself discovering those southern roots; even if he doesn't know it.
"Oh sure, that's the first music I ever remember hearing," he said with what would become a familiar laugh. "I heard a lot about Howlin' Wolf growing up because he was from the same area I'm from and it's still some of my favorite music to put on. "Moanin in the Moonlight" is probably one of my favorite albums; God it's so good. The recordings, I'm inspired by the productions and the album stuff that Sam Phillips did, he was so ahead of his time and if you listen to "Blue Moon" by Elvis, that vocal effect then; it sounded like it was comin' from Mars which is a whole other thing and I've just always been enamored by that Memphis and Southern stuff. I think it's just kind of by osmosis (laughs), you just kind of soak it up without realizing it. I work with other bands in the studio a lot and always get inspired by working with other musicians and my peers around here. There are so many great players here and you get a little something from everybody you run across and meet in the music world. I try to make it all come out my own way though."
We will see what he "Got" on May 2, May 3 and May 4 when he visits Krough's Restaurant & Brew Pub in Sparta, Boonton Coffee Co. in Boonton and Flounder Brewing in Hillsborough, NJ, in that date and order but to understand the man whose latest release is called "Nowhere to Land," one must understand; it hasn't always been easy.
"Well, I was in a horrific train and car collision when I was 16 years old and things were really out of my control from that point. I broke every damn bone in my body. I got my first guitar when I was seven or eight and I still have that thing and it's a '61 Epiphone Serranto that one of my dad's buddies gave to me and I didn't really even know what I had (laughs). Me and my brother abused that guitar when we were younger because we wanted things like Flying Vs; it's a hollow body that kind of looks like a 335 but once I got to Austin, I took it up to One World Music which used to be a vintage guitar shop here and they were like, "That's a '61 Serrento" and I thought, OK, I'm gonna get that fixed up and now I have it back in action. I started on piano but I remember specifically that I wanted to learn "Hurts So Good" by John Cougar and I wanted to play guitar, so I switched over (laughs). I wish I had stuck with the piano lessons a little longer though; that should lay it all out there for ya' (laughs)."
"Nowhere to Land" is his second solo album to go along with some successes earlier in his music career with another band and like so many others, COVID forced him to adapt to a new recording style.
"Nowhere to Land" was written during COVID because, you know, everybody had a little time on there hands," he laughed. "I wrote a lot of songs during that time; I guess that's what happens when you sober up a bit. I was sitting around; "What else am I gonna do? I'm gonna sit here and try and crank out songs and record them;" I don't know, those just fit together to me for whatever reason. I don't question it too much, they just worked together and I rolled with it. I recorded those a little differently than I did before because I couldn't get everyone in the studio together, I cut everything to a loop and cut it with guitar and acoustic live because I'd also been out playing those songs like that and so I'd cut them like that and figure out who I wanted to bring in to vibe up over it and it worked and it was an enjoyable way to make a record; in fact, I'm almost done with another one (laughs). I'm just trying to keep constantly recording, that's what I wanna do."
"As a solo," he continued, "I have two. I've released a couple of singles since then but my previous band, Moonlight Towers had four or five albums since the early 2000s. We had a couple of songs that Little Steven played a lot and still does. I told Wendy (PR Wendy Brynford-Jones), she should send him the new stuff, maybe he'll remember me (laughs)."
So, What's with the title? Stevens responses were deliberate, yet honest.
"Being a divorced, middle-aged man trying to figure out what the hell was going on (laughs). I don't know, it was just a feeling of trying to find your place in the world; I guess it's a constant search. It lept out to me, I'd written a song called "Nowhere to Land" which I think is track five and I think the melody and feel of it kind of encapsulated the whole of the thing.I think I'm tapping into my southern roots more on this record; when I was young, I wanted to hide and run from them. When I moved out here, I kind of felt out of place and wanted to fit in but I just don't care anymore. I just really locked in on playing acoustic and making the songs work with just that. They had to pass that test for me and be able for me to feel like I could stand behind them so if I was playing them by myself in front of an audience, I needed to know they'd work. Previously, I always thought the other way, well, the band will make it rock and I think that had a lot to do with how I approach things now."
With the April release of the new record and the tour in progress; what can New Jersey expect at the three shows he's booked here?
"I hit the road in April, I did a few shows at South by, usually I do like eight shows but I took it light this year and only did two. I had my official showcase, I was sandwiched between two loud bands and I showed up with a guitar and my harmonica (laughs). The album came out April 12, a single called "Cherry Sunburst" came out on April 22."
"My shows are going to be solo acoustic," he explained. "I may bring an electric guitar along for some total variation but yes, they will be solo because it is doable right now; it's tough taking a band on the road, it's even harder than it used to be and I can make this work. I'll be playing the whole new album, a lot of songs from my last album, I'll do a lot of new material because I'm constanyly writing. I tend to do a lot of writing on the road because you're living in that moment, you're in the capsule of time, traveling and playing and for me at least, my head really gets into that space. So, if I'm driving, I'm thinking about songs and when I get to the hotel room I'll crank some stuff out and I'll usually try and play some of those on the spot during a tour if I write something. I figure I'll save myself six months of practice if I just play it live once (laughs); you play it in front of people you figure out what works real quick. I do also do some covers, I've got a gaggle of covers that I can pull from depending on the moment. I won't be doing "Hurts So Good" (laughs). I probably should but I am doing "Right Down The Line" by Gerry Rafferty, a lot of people love that song; that melody just kills me, it's a beautiful song."
