Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...2/23/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 02/23/2023

“The name Project 18 Jay came about because we all grew up in East Brunswick and Route 18 is the main thoroughfare and so they came up with the name Project 18.”

It has been said that, "Music makes the world smaller" and this has been proven time and time again as musicians reunite or re-discover old band mates, friends or collaborators. Such is the recent case with the well-respected and much sought after Dave Vargo; who, in no small part, thanks to today's technology, found himself being asked to step outside of his comfort zone due to a chance encounter with an old school chum and the four-song EP, "Pomona" was the result.

“Yes," laughed Vargo, "An old high school friend, Scott Rubine; who I haven't heard from or spoken to since high school. I ran into him, I guess, a couple of years ago and he said, “Hey, I've been following your music career and it’s good to see you're still doing some stuff” and then more recently he reached out and said, “Hey, another guy from East Brunswick that I know, we wrote some songs together; can I send them to you and let me know what you think? So, it’s not every day that someone out of the blue wants to send me a song but they sent me “Know My Name” as the first song and it needed polish. I could hear some possibilities and promise in the song, and I said, that's great! So, they sent me a whole bunch more and a couple of them were better than others, so I worked on them. I did a quick demo for “Know My Name” and sent it back to them and they loved it. They sent me another one, “In The Night” and I did the same thing and we got to the point where we had three songs that I thought were promising and they decided that they wanted to record them and asked if I would kind of put it together because they don't know anything about music and recording studios. So, I got my team assembled and put down three songs and in the midst of that, they sent me a fourth song and so we ended up with a four song EP. Jay Weiner is the guy who wrote the lyrics and he is not of a musical background; he was more of a poetry writer and my friend Scott did the music and all that it needed, for lack of a better term; was to be massaged. I had to kind of work out the form of the song, sometimes I had to lengthen some of or shorten the melodies just to make everything fit together but we got four songs that I think came out really well in the studio and they're very happy with them and we're getting positive responses and it was a fun project for me because normally I'm in the studio for two reasons; one, I'm in there working on my own stuff or I get hired to play guitar on something; which I go in and get out. I’ll go in and they’ll say, hey, can you do something on this song and I’ll record my part and I'm gone; you don't even hear the finished product but for this, I was there from beginning to the end on stuff that I didn't write and I was kind of going at it from a different perspective and got to use some different muscles than I typically would use and it was nice; it was a good experience being kind of a producer/ singer. I think we're all happy with the how it came out and just talked about possibly doing some more work together."

With every creative, there is usually a period of inner turmoil when working on their art but; what about when working on someone else's art? It is easy to have a favored child when they belong to somebody else and also easy to not be terribly fond of the sibling(s). So, since this was Vargo's real first foray into producing and "Massaging" works other than his own; were there any conflicts?

“There are two standout songs for me," he began carefully, "If I had to choose, they would be “Know My Name” and “In The Night” because I thought that they were just really good pop/kind of today's Country, kind of 90’s rock kind of feel and it suited them very well. I catch myself sometimes humming them without even realizing it and saying, wait a second, that’s a Project 18 song. “Lucky Charm” was the last one we did and that one took a lot more work than the other ones because the two that I just mentioned; I felt like, in the beginning, right away they had promise and with the other one, “You’re My Life,” I heard less promise with those than the other two. “Lucky Charms” took me some time to wrap my head around and then once I did the first rough mixes in the studio, I sent it to the guys and they were like, no; this is not how we wanted this to sound. They kind of wanted this power pop thing going on so I had to go back in and rearrange things a little bit and redo some parts and that is the one that Jonathan Tea sang on because I couldn't really find a good way for myself to sing that song vocal-range wise.”

"Know My Name" is exactly as advertised, a pop-ditty whose underlying organ gives it a definitive "Jersey" sound re-enforced by the bright textures in the production. This one features a twangy guitar with some very cool syncopation in both the chorus and verse and just an over-all catchy rhythm; one can see why it caught Dave's ear instantly.

"In the night there is sadness, in the night there is fear, in the night there is hope that I'll see you again," pop-like lyrics to a straight-forward pop tune. "In The Night" is likely the one Vargo catches himself humming most often as its melody is infectious. This is one of those tunes where the lyrics are a dichotomy to the upbeat music, yet they work very well in tandem and it's also one with that signature "Vargo style."

"Lucky Charm" has a retro-style late 1980's or early 1990's feel to it; think Extreme's "More Than Words." Jonathan Tea lends his usual stellar vocal to this ballad, giving it a nice combination of grit and soulful smoothness.

"You're My Life" also features a big sound and is another that has Vargo's stamp all over it. Shall there be any doubt, listen to Dave's latest release, "Crooked Miles." One of the best things about Vargo is, where other artists find a formula or a certain sound resulting in many or much of their songs sounding the same; Vargo has a certain style, as mentioned earlier, a style that separates him from the rest while still keeping his sound intact. What he did here with the production and how the engineer handled the mix on the entire EP is fantastic!

Rubine and Weiner, along with Vargo, Tea and the entire "Team" have done a great job with this EP. Sometimes, when life pushes you in an unfamiliar direction, you just have to follow the new path. So, what's Vargo's take on the outcome?

“I think we are all very happy with the way everything came out. I think it was a fun experience for me to work with somebody else's material from the beginning of the project to the end of the project and put my little touch on things. I mean, I guess it sounds Dave Vargo-ish but I don't think we changed any of our production values for this from what we've done on the Dave Vargo albums but they were definitely different songs that I would not have written."
