"Yes, Saturday February 10; I've done this a few times with this group; it has been going for I think about 30 years with different configurations and I've been in and out of it over the years but I've been a mainstay for the last three years now and it's just so much fun. We not only do little tiny individual mini-sets but we do a lot of collaborating, a lot of harmony and it's a really fun show for us," states singer/songwriter Lucy Kaplansky about the upcoming February 10 "On A Winter's Night" show at Monmouth University's Pollak Theater in Long Branch, NJ. "I've played there a bunch of times over the years and the good thing about the setup is that everyone can see; it is kind of a clever way to set up a theater and it's intimate."
Joining Lucy on stage for the event are fellow singer/songwriters Patty Larkin, John Gorka and Cliff Eberhardt; all veterans of music and touring, all with interesting stories on their paths to success and all very capable of handling evenings such as this as a solo act. However, it is Kaplansky, whose path has taken her through various stages and steps all of which have led back to one main stage; a performing one.
"I'll try to make this brief because it's a long story," she began with a sincere laugh. "I always wanted to be a singer, I grew up in Chicago and I moved to New York to be part of the Folk Music scene in the late '70s and then decided, for reasons that I didn't figure out until later that I was going to quit; I didn't want to be a singer. I went back to school and got a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and then after I was a Psychologist, I figured out that actually what I really had always wanted was to sing. So, I went back to singing and that was 28 years ago and I really never looked back. So, it has been a little bit of a twisted path but I can't imagine not ever playing music; that's unimaginable to me."
Most musicians have a bit of an eccentric personality, if even in a small way and many have a love/hate relationship with their instruments. They often struggle with performing, the business and promotional sides, the desire to stay active or to keep up with all of the things necessary to stay relevant and many walk away; it's only those who have it in their makeup that seem to return. Kaplansky knew first hand when she returned to school what it's like to walk away allowing, "Life to get in the way." Fortunately, unlike many, she realized that more than just family and psychology pulsed through her veins.
"It's one thing to play music and another to play music for a living; those are two different things," she said with confidence. "I can imagine eventually not wanting to be out doing gigs all of the time; you know, eventually, I don't know when eventually is but I think it will be very hard for someone who has got music in their blood to just not play music; I don't know why they would do that. It is very tough, I don't mean it's a tough job, although any job can be tough, traveling can be tough; playing music is not a tough job, I've had tough jobs but it is tough to make a living at music, it's tough out there. Like I said, it's hard to get traction and maintain traction. So, you have to really persevere in light of some not great stuff happening sometimes and that is not for everyone."
Musicians are always their own worst critics, often criticizing themselves relentlessly trying to find perfection in their writing, playing and performing. Given her education in the field of Psychology; does she find herself being overly critical of herself and has an analytical way of thinking ever crept into her music?
"I wouldn't say that I'm overly critical," she chuckled. "I would say the huge, huge, maybe the hugest part of writing is rewriting and editing to try and make it better. The way I look at how being a psychologist has affected me is that it has affected everything about me. I learned so much in school and in my practice about what makes people tick, their motivations and their conflicts including my own motivations and my own conflicts and that has affected how I look at the world. So, that's the way I see it; it has affected my world view and my understanding of the world and so it has got to be showing up in my songs; I can't put my finger on it, it's just part of who I am."
"On A Winter's Night" is an evening of solo and group performances by a highly talented cast who are continuing to put together night after night of stellar performances and have done so since the concept was founded. So, what can we expect at The Pollak Theater on Saturday February 10?
"Like I said, it started 30 years ago and I wasn't part of it back then, that was ChristineLavin, David Wilcox, Cheryl Wheeler and it has had different people over the years and now I seem to be a permanent part of it," she explained. "Over the last three years, it has been just me, Cliff, John, Patty and it looks like it's going to stay that way unless somebody drops out; which none of us plan to do. The way we've been doing the show is we each do a couple of songs by ourselves and then we all come out together for the rest of the show and it is an "In the round" because we trade off but it's not exactly like a Nashville thing because we also sing on each other's songs and play on each other's songs. So, it has become more of like a band than just a round robin; there is a lot of collaboration, which I think is part of what makes it a special show. Although there is some improvising, we have rehearsed and by doing these shows, we have gotten better and better at the parts so there is no improvisation except on occasion; it's done more like band arrangements."
The Monmouth University show is book-ended by a Friday February 9 at The Sellersville Theater and a Sunday February 11 show at New York's City Winery. The entire tour kicked off on January 7 in Anchorage, Alaska but unfortunately for Lucy, she wasn't there.
"Yeah," she laughed once again, "I actually got COVID the night before we were supposed to leave for Alaska. So, I ended up missing the entire first part of the tour; I was just beside myself with upset because of the awful timing; I had gone four years without getting COVID. So, they all went to Alaska, Arizona, the West Coast and I joined them the following week. We've been in the Midwest and the Northeast the last couple of weeks and when we come to Long Branch, it's part of a New York Metropolitan area kind of thing."
With a career that has spanned multiple decades, surely there must be something that she enjoys to keep her coming back to the road and her art; what is it?
"That's a good question; I love recording. I don't get to do it often enough and even less often these days because there is a lot less money around for recording than there was when I started out. I love recording but I guess my favorite parts are actually being on stage and especially being on stage with other people where I can collaborate. Those are probably my favorite things and partly recording which is all about collaborating, it's not about a band and a producer. I love being on stage by myself because there is a ton of freedom. I can do whatever I want, I can change up the set, I can improvise but I also like being on stage with other people because I love to collaborate musically."
"I do love it," she went on, "It's like any job, travel can be really tiring but I love doing the shows and meeting the audiences afterward and I love, love, love this kind of collaborating show where I get to sing a lot of harmony; so, all of those configurations I really do enjoy."
