“It's all about the selections and realizations and understandings and life from the beginning of the inception of the soul up until the baby is born; which is an eternal being in my book, all the way through life. The first thing you hear on the record is the actual sound of an unborn baby heartbeat and that's an actual unborn child's heartbeat right off the bat. So, it's loosely based around all of the lessons that I've learned in my life in chronological order from birth, all the way until the end of this life here on this planet," stated Lillian Axe lead guitarist and principal songwriter Steve Blaze as he discussed the band's recent release "From Womb to Tomb."
With the passing of former manager and close friend Charlie Bagarozza, perhaps the album's title and above statement from Blaze lend credence to a new beginning for this hard rocking band from New Orleans, LA. who have a new label deal to go along with a resurgent tour schedule and fan base.
“Believe it or not, it’s our ninth label deal and it's a brand-new label under TheStore For Music umbrella which is a big re-issue label over in the UK. They contacted me through their A&R guy Giles Lavery who was friends with our drummer Wayne. Wayne joined the band a couple of years ago and they were talking and Giles was like, “Hey I'm getting ready to do A&R for this new label and we would love to sign Lillian Axe; are they with anybody right now?” Luckily, we were in a situation where we could negotiate with them and we did and they put out the new record they put an anthology album out three months ago and reissued our whole catalog; it's a good relationship and a good start”
A "Good start" is always a welcome start and according to Blaze; the music starts with him and his songwriting ability.
“I've put a lot of time and hours and work into it and this is a 16-track album with four musical interludes and 12 tracks. From the beginning of our existence, I've written 95 percent of the songs; everything. I write the music, lyrics, arrangements, etcetera. That's just how it works in this band, that's what signed us to MCA in the first place was the songs and I'm just saying I write a lot. Being a songwriter is not just coming up with a riff and throwing it down on a piece of paper and everybody plays to it; for me it's a lot more personal, it's an emotional thing and it's something that you work hard at. You spend many, many hours writing lots of material and it's just something that you can actually develop but to be a songwriter is something innate it's; just like any talent, it's something that's given to you but you have to cultivate it and that's just the way that it's always been with this band. It’s not that I don't welcome other songs but in our situation everybody's like, hey Steve writes the songs and the essence of this band is the songs so they're all very happy with it. They all have opinions and make comments and have ideas to enhance them but for the most part I write everything.”
One of the things Blaze stresses is a band's need to find their own identity; something that can often be a struggle in today's point and click, downloadable world. Bands are lumped together in categories and genres and those like Lillian Axe can oft times be put into various columns such as Metal, Rock, Progressive, etc. He is quick to point out that they are really none of those things and also says that patience plays a large role in a band achieving their niche.
“I would say none of the above, we're really uniquely different," he said with confidence. "When we first came out, we got lumped in with the Rats and the Crue and Queensryche and bands like that, which are great bands but it always takes few albums for a band to develop their own identity in the eye of the public. We have done that since then but we have done shows with everyone from Judas Priest to Alice Cooper to The Stray Cats to Eddie Money. We have our own entity, we pretty much can fit anywhere but we are a big, heavy, Hard Rock epic band. On this album there's cellos and choirs and strings and tubular bells and Timpanis and piano along with massively heavy guitars and drums and lots of vocals. So, the one word that keeps coming to me over and over is epic. So yeah, you just have to hear it and draw your own conclusions but we're not unique to any particular style other than we're a hard rock band. I was going to say how I was thinking about Rush and songs like “Xanadu” and “Farewell to Kings” and all their early stuff; kind of like that type of epic progressive stuff was always a big influence on us but then again, we have straight ahead Hard Rock songs as well. All of our albums are uniquely different from each other. I mean, we still have all the same rock elements, there are big guitar armies, big drums, etc. but a lot of dynamics and a lot of changes. We spent a lot of time developing our own unique stamp out there and we don't sound like anybody else. We've never actually ever been compared like, oh you guys' sound like this band or that band. Once in a while somebody says this or that but we’re kind of our own unique weird anomaly."
"That's the whole idea," he continued, "To create our own legacy, our own stamp, our own brand and that takes time. That takes years to be able to do that; it takes continually putting out creative things for the world to absorb and that's what we've been doing for many years and that's why it's kind of a blessing and a curse, it's a blessing in a way that you become unique in that people can't put you into a nice compartment but it's also got its drawbacks in that a lot of the public looks for something neatly packaged that they can understand in one sentence. So, you kind of just go with what's more important to you; is it important for you to stick to your guns and be true to what you love and what you want to give to people or are you in it just to make a few bucks? We'll just keep on playing out and not put out any new music and we'll just go ahead and do this for the money; there's no right or wrong but there are different venues and different avenues for different bands and it all depends on what their motives are.”
A 16-track album is as rare as a concept album in this day and age. There are very few "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Close to the Edge" type of productions but this doesn't faze Blaze or the band and they even enlisted the help of one of the best mastering engineers in the business to drive that point home and thus far; the reviews have been fantastic.
“We have a song on the new album that's seven minutes and two seconds long called “Dance of the Maggots” so; do you think I'm really worried about that? You know what? I'll go with what everybody keeps telling me; everybody says this, “I have one word, epic.” I'm like OK, we'll stick with that! I've heard that that's a good word so yeah. I think it's our opus, it's an immensely big, emotional, powerful record and it sounds amazing. Ted Jensen mastered it Ken Bruce mixed it. Ted Jensen has mastered the new Ghost album, “Hotel California” by the Eagles, Billy Joel,Madonna, Guns N’ Roses; his list is a mile long of major albums that he has mastered and he did a phenomenal job on this. I knew his name but I believe I got his name through George Marino, another brilliant, well-known master of the mastering and George Marino mastered one of our early albums. I think he did “Love and War” and you know these guys that do all of these big records, they know exactly what they're doing. When I heard the new Ghost record, we had already thought about Ted Jensen and then when the Ghost record came out; I was like, this sounds great! So, it just so happened that Jensen did that too. So, it was like a sign from God that he was the man to do this so that's where we went and he did it; we found that he had an opening in his schedule and so we were blessed.”
After previously sharing stages with such diverse acts as those mentioned earlier; what plans do they have going forward to promote the release?
"We went to Monsters on the Mountain to play that festival, we went to Gatlinburg and then we went to Atlanta and then flew to the UK to do seven days in a row doing some headline tour of the UK and then we came back here and we'll pick it up again. We want to let this album get some tread and get some legs and we'll figure out. We had a new video debut so we're pretty stoked and we have a lot of stuff in the fire right now. I'm not sure yet but it looks like we're going to enter into a deal with a new management company and the first thing to do is to find the right touring situation. We had some sporadic shows lined up throughout Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Florida but we're looking to find the right touring situation so that we can get out there and whether we go with another band or however we want to do it, we're not sure yet. I want this album to get some legs and get out there in people's minds and then we'll figure out how we're gonna do this. We've got to be smart about our touring and we've got to be thorough; we should know more soon.“
