Rock On! This Week

September 16, 2022 saw Ireland's Karan Casey take the intimate stage of The Hopewell Theater and bring it to life in a way that very few can.

Accompanied by the steady Sean Og Graham on guitar and the talented Niamh Dunne on fiddle and backing vocals, Casey took her audience on a rollercoaster ride of an evening as she mixed her original music with that of her homeland in an up and down dynamic performance which kicked off with a selection from her latest release, "Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale" called, "Sixteen Come Next Sunday."

Instantly noticeable was the trio's chemistry and genuine joy of sharing the spotlight as a well-oiled unit; their smiles, looks and head-nods told even the untrained eye that this was going to be a special performance. Next up was Iain Sinclair's, "The King's Shilling" followed by her own, "Down in the Glen" also from her latest release.

Only three songs in and the one could feel the magic in the air; Casey's delightful authenticity, interwoven with tales of her songwriting and heritage were perfects compliments to her charm as she broke into, "Lovely Annie" from her album, "Two More Hours."

A self-confessed fan of Janis Ian, she brought her classic "I'm Still Standing Here" to life with beautiful harmonies and excellent guitar work by Og Graham in a fantastic heartfelt rendition; a definite highlight and one of the many.

"Nine Apples of Gold" was attributed to a visit to Og Graham and Dunne's studio and was a preview of her January 2023 album of the same name. Casey then turned the lead vocals over to Dunne after voicing her support for the women of America and the sounds of the upbeat "Sister" filled the venue.

Remember the aforementioned "Rollercoaster?" "The Fiddle and the Drum" began with haunting fiddle and guitar; draping a cloak of eerie over the crowd as Casey's vocals blended in and out with the ease of an IMAX movie flight over the Cliffs of Moher. Just when you thought the journey was slowly coming to a stop; they transitioned smoothly into a toned down yet powerful version of "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye," a perfect blend of melodies and harmonies.

Reaching back to show her love of Folk music; in particular Bob Dylan and Eliza Gilkyson, she steamed toward the end of the evening with two remakes that can be found on "Hieroglyphs;" "Hollis Brown" and "Man of God."

This exceptional evening had come to an end but any review of this show would be an injustice if there was no mention of the opening act and quasi-emcee; Helen O'Shea along with the uber-talented James Popik on guitar. O'Shea; also a native of Ireland and current Princeton area resident and Popik weaved through an approximate 30-minute set of her original music and interesting tales as well as offering much praise of Casey in the process. O'Shea gave up a career as a doctor in Ireland to pursue her dreams of singing and songwriting and has done so with a fearlessness that is unrivaled; the word "No" is not in her vocabulary and this was very evident as she revealed her authentic and vulnerable sides while engaging the audience. Helen's colorful stories and honest assessments were not only funny but insightful and Popik did a wonderful job of keeping up. O'Shea works with Grammy Award winning producer Marc Swersky and is currently in-studio putting the finishing touches on her latest effort which is due out soon.

Rock On! This Week

All in all, it was a fabulous night of culture integrating music that made this reviewer a fan of all involved.
