Oscar Nominated Live-Action Shorts and Documentary Short Films to Screen in Spring Lake

(SPRING LAKE, NJ) -- If you’d like to see this year's Oscar Nominated short films before the 95th annual awards are broadcast on March 12th, here’s your chance. Of the three categories open for nomination—Live-Action, Documentary and Animation—Spring Lake Theatre will host Lighthouse International Film Society’s screening of the Live-Action nominees on Friday evening, February 17, and Documentaries on Saturday, February 18.

This special release, made possible by ShortsTV, features the year's most spectacular short films and is available to watch on the big screen for only a limited time. And if you’ve never visited the charming and historic Spring Lake Community house, which houses the Spring Lake Theatre, you’re in for a special treat.

Live-Action Shorts: Friday, February 17 at 7:30pm

“An Irish Goodbye” - When their mother suddenly dies, two estranged brothers find themselves reunited in their rural Northern Ireland hometown.

“Ivalu” -  A young girl in Greenland desperately searches for her older sister who has disappeared.

“Le Pupille” - This short film follows the rebellious inhabitants of a Catholic girls' boarding school during the lead up to Christmas.

“Night Ride” - Dunja is a young student who has just moved to a big city from her hometown and misses the support of her friend.

“The Red Suitcase” - A teenage girl from Iran is scared to bring her suitcase through the automatic arrival doors of the Luxembourg Airport and keeps pushing back the task of going through the door.

Documentary Shorts: Saturday, February 18 at 7:30pm

“The Elephant Whisperers” - Bomman and Bellie, a couple in South India, devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, forging a family like no other that tests the bonds and barriers between the human and the animal world.

“Haulout” - Waiting in a desolate hut in the Russian Arctic, a man holds out in order to observe the yearly coming ashore of the walruses. But ocean warming is taking its toll.

“How Do You Measure a Year?” - Every year a father films his daughter on her birthday, asking the same questions but getting different answers. In a mere 29 minutes we see her progression from toddler to young woman, with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between.

“The Martha Mitchell Effect” - This short documentary profiles Nixon cabinet member John Mitchell's wife, Martha, who spoke out during Watergate, and subsequently suffered the administration's campaign to silence her.

“Stranger at the Gate” - An Afghan refugee with her members of a small Indiana mosque come face to face with the U.S. Marine who secretly planned to bomb their community center.

In recent years, the Oscar® Nominated Short Films have been released in over 700 theaters across the US and Canada, garnering reviews in every major news outlet, from The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Deadline to The New York Times.
