(NEWARK, NJ) -- Greater Newark community members in need of a winter coat and essential items to brave the cold this winter will be able to access these resources this month at the Newark-based nonprofit United Community Corporation's "Cookies, Coats and Cocoa" distribution.
UCC is inviting the community to West Side Park Community Center, located at 600 S. 17th St., Newark, to its annual winter resource distribution event on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 to enjoy sweet treats and warm drinks while accessing essential resources. The event will be held from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
While attendees can receive a free winter coat donated by Franciscan Charities and various community supporters, they can stay cozy with cookies and hot cocoa donated by Jersey Cares and various community supporters. Additionally, blankets and toys will be available, donated by Chase. Attendees will also be able to receive free groceries provided by UCC’s Champion House Food Pantry.
“As temperatures drop, the challenges that our community faces only increase,” said UCC Executive Director Craig Mainor. “For some, a warm coat can mean the difference between safety and hardship during the winter months. Cookies, Coats and Cocoa is about meeting these needs while bringing the community together to inspire hope and remind everyone they’re not alone.”
Winter presents unique obstacles for residents across Greater Newark, where many community members face economic hardships and limited access to essential resources. The financial strain of purchasing winter clothing, coupled with rising living costs, can leave families struggling to stay warm and safe.
By providing free coats and other winter necessities, UCC aims to ease these burdens and ensure that everyone in the community is equipped to weather the season. In addition to resources provided by UCC, local agencies and officials will be present to offer information about community services and support programs.
“We ask everyone in the area who may need an essential item or outreach resources for themselves, their families or a neighbor to come to this event,” Mainor said. “We’re here to lift each other up and ensure everyone has what they need to stay warm and cared for this winter."
The event also highlights the contributions of UCC’s YouthBuild program participants, who constructed the cocoa distribution stand that will be used at the event. The YouthBuild program combines education, vocational training, and community service to empower young adults with practical skills and workforce readiness.
Cookies, Coats and Cocoa is made possible by the support from UCC’s partners and supporters, including Peapack-Gladstone Bank, Wellpoint, Newark Centers of Hope, Essex County, United by Blue and Franciscan Charities.
