Appropriation Bag-The Plight of the Black Woman I (2006) by Cheryl R. Riley
(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- New Jersey City University (NJCU) Visual Arts Gallery presents Home Here from February 5 through March 5, 2026. This is a site-specific installation that combines the work of 11 artists identifying as women living in Jersey City.
Curated by alumna Lucy Rovetto (1991 BFA), the show will explore themes of history and memory. The installation will be designed as a continuous flow where works will overlap, interact, and sometimes have no clear boundaries.
The featured artists include Laia Cabrera, Nicole DeMaio, Isabelle Duverger, Jaz Graf, Katelyn Halpern, Jin Jung, Pat Lay, Tina Maneca, Cheryl R. Riley, Jennifer Roberts. The exhibition also honors the work of Ward Mount, a painter, sculptor, educator, and former chair of the Art Department at NJCU (then Jersey City State Teacher’s College) in the 1940s. Historian Martin Pierce will illuminate Ward Mount's contributions through his research.
There will be an Opening Reception on Ferbuary 5 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. The New Jersey City University Visual Arts Gallery is located in the Lower Level, Visual Arts Building (100 Culver Avenue) in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Please note: The NJCU Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery remains closed until further notice due to major repairs. "Winifred McNeill: Between Air and Earth" will be held at the Visual Arts Gallery from March 16 to April 10, with the reception on Wednesday, March 18 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. An artist conversation with Dr. Marice Rose will start at 5:30pm.
