Music Mountain Theatre presents "The King and I"

originally published: 07/23/2024

(LAMBERTVILLE, NJ) -- Music Mountain Theatre (MMT) presents a four-weekend run of The King and I from July 26 – August 18, 2024. This is the classic musical from the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It is the tenth mainstage show of MMT's 2024 season.

Set in the 1860s, The King and I is based on the true story of an English widow, Anna Leonowens, who travels to Siam with her young son to teach the King’s many children. The King is largely considered to be a “barbarian” by those in the West, and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.

Through her kindness and persistence, Anna eventually connects with the King, helping to fuel mutual feelings of social understanding, cultural acceptance, and open heartedness. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and respect one another in a truly unique love story.

In this production of The King and I, the role of the King will be played by Daniel Park Mucha and the role of Anna Leonowens will be played by Jenny McNiven. With iconic musical numbers such as “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance”, and “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” audiences are sure to be swept away.

The King and I will run on the MMT stage from July 26th–August 18th, with 8:00pm evening performances on Fridays and Saturdays and 3:00 pm matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are available for purchase online. For all MMT shows, discounted tickets are available for students, seniors, and members of the military, as well as for subscribers to MMT, and in group sales of fifteen or more.

Following the matinée performance on Sunday, July 28th, MMT will host a special talkback session with Will Hammerstein, the grandson of the musical's lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein II. The talkback will begin around 5:45pm, and priority seating will be reserved for patrons who purchased tickets for that afternoon’s show.

This production was made possible with funds from the Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
