McCarter Theatre presents "Dreamgirls"

(PRINCETON, NJ) -- This March, the McCarter Theatre Center, in a partnership with Goodspeed Musicals, presents the revival of the Tony® and Grammy® award-winning musical, Dreamgirls. Coming to Princeton after an acclaimed and blockbuster run in Connecticut, the production features talent that has illuminated stages from Broadway to national tours and graced airwaves on platforms like American IdolDreamgirls will take place at McCarter's Matthews Theatre from March 6-24, 2024.

Directed by five-time Jeff Award winner Lili-Anne Brown, Dreamgirls transports its audience to the golden era of music, chronicling the rise of a girl singing group in the 1960s. It's a tale woven with the threads of friendship, fame, and the relentless pursuit of dreams amidst the trials of the music industry. With dazzling costumes, glittering sets, and heart-racing choreography, this smash hit sizzles with a beloved score featuring the chart-topping hits, “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “One Night Only.”

The cast includes Ta-Tynisa Wilson* (Hamilton, American Idol Top 24 Finalist) as Deena, Keirsten Hodgens* (SIX) as Lorrell, and Trejah Bostic* (Aretha Franklin in National Tour of RESPECT.: An Aretha Franklin Tribute) as Effie.

Curtis will be played by Evan Tyrone Martin*, CC will be played by Jos N. Banks*, Jimmy will be played by Saint Aubyn*, and Marty will be played by Robert Cornelius*.

The ensemble will feature Chuckie Benson*, Shantel Cribbs*, Arnold Harper II*, Alia Hodge*, Alfred Jackson*, Melanie Loren*, Kwame M. Remy*, Aalon Smith*, Montria Walker*, Sean Walton*, and Jalisa Williams*.

Swings for this production will be Lois Ellise and Joel Oliver*.

Musicians include Christie Chiles Twillie (Conductor/Keyboard), Wes Dziedzic (Keyboard II), Jakubu Griffin (Percussion), Tessa O’Boyle (Reeds), Matthew Owens (Trumpet), Adam Machaskee (Trombone), Ben Weiss (Guitar), Sherisse Rogers (Bass).

Dreamgirls features book & lyrics by Tony Award winner Tom Eyen with music by Henry Krieger.

The Anthropologists present World Premiere of "axes, herbs and satchels" at Art House

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- The Anthropologists, a NYC-based, female-led, investigative theater company launches the world premiere of their devised play "axes, herbs and satchels." The tour begins in Jersey City at Art House on February 19-20, 2025, followed by stops in Delray Beach at Arts Garage on February 23, and Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana on March 5. The show will return to New York City in Spring 2025 with performances in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Passage Theatre Company presents Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play "Topdog/Underdog"

Topdog/Underdog by Pulitzer prize-winning Black playwright Suzan-Lori Parks is receiving its Trenton, New Jersey premiere at Passage Theatre Company, as part of its landmark 40th anniversary season. The play opens February 21, 2025, and runs until March 9, 2025, at the Mill Hill Playhouse. A darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity, Topdog/Underdog tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke by their father, foreshadowing a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment.

American Theater Group presents "Purlie"

(RAHWAY, NJ) -- Broadway veteran Kenny Ingram will direct American Theater Group's (ATG) production of the exhilarating and Tony Award-winning musical Purlie, running March 6-23, 2025, at Hamilton Stage in Rahway. Gary Mitchell, Jr. will provide Musical Direction. Purlie is the 1970 musical adaptation of Ossie Davis's comedic play Purlie Victorious, which just completed a hugely successful revival on Broadway last season.
