(PRINCETON, NJ) -- McCarter Theatre is proud to present the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 1:00pm. Last month, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's visit was nearly cancelled due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and consequent shrinking resources. However, thanks to a community-wide effort to raise critical funds, this challenge was overcome. Now, the venerated orchestra will take the stage at McCarter's Matthews Theatre, presenting a rich program that showcases some of Ukraine’s most renowned musicians.

Audiences are invited to stay for 'Artists in Wartime' - a special post-concert conversation with Symphony Director Alexander Hornostai and Princeton University visiting scholar and Ukrainian Historian Iuliia Skubytsa.

Facing dwindling funding from the Ukrainian Government, business community, and humanitarian aid, along with the growing logistical challenges of navigating in and out of a warzone, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine’s much anticipated US engagement was in jeopardy. Believing in the vital importance of supporting these artists and celebrating Ukrainian musical culture, McCarter mobilized its partner network calling on University and community partners – and brand-new supporters – to help close the financial gap.

“Touring an entire symphony orchestra across the world is an immense challenge, not to mention during a time of war. The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine has been an instrumental part of Ukrainian culture for over 100 years, I’m so proud we are able to showcase their incredible artistry and I’m thankful to our community friends who came together to ensure this show goes on,” said Paula Abreu, Director of Presented Programming.

The post-concert talk is part of McCarter’s Arts & Ideas program which connects Princeton University and community partners to the work on stage and behind the scenes. “We are eager to share this experience and celebrate the power of the arts in bridging divides and promoting understanding.
