Lighthouse Film Society & South End Surf 'N Paddle present "The Yin and Yang of Gerry Lopez"

originally published: 11/21/2022

(BEACH HAVEN, NJ) -- In support of LBI’s “Shop Local Weekend,” Lighthouse International Film Society and South End Surf 'N Paddle are hooking up to present another great surf film, “The Yin and Yang of Gerry Lopez,” a film produced by Patagonia clothing company that lifts the veil on one of surfing’s most complex and enigmatic figures. The screening takes place at South End Surf ‘N Paddle on Saturday, November 26. Showtime is 7:30pm.

While Lopez is famously known as “Mr. Pipeline” for his calm demeanor in massive tubes, what’s less known is his demanding, often aggressive approach to other facets of his life, which on occasion have left behind a trail of blood and tears.

One of the most influential surfers and surfboard shapers of all time—as well as an entrepreneur, family man, movie star and lifelong yogi—the film zeros in on these fascinating contradictions, rendering Gerry as radical as he is Zen.

This feature-length film, from award-winning documentary filmmaker Stacy Peralta, explores the scope of his influence on modern surfing, and for the first time, tells his story in full.

Tickets are $10 online, $12 at door. Click here to purchase tickets online.  Advance reservations strongly encouraged as seating is limited. South End Surf ‘N Paddle is located at 220 S Bay Avenue in Beach Haven, New Jersey.

Masterful

Masterful short Supercritical screens at the New Jersey Film Festival on Saturday, January 25, 2025

“We have just learned of a massive release of nuclear warheads, authorized by the United States.” Those are the grim words uttered at the beginning of the short Supercritical. Heightening our anxiety (and our blood pressure), the stakes continue to stack, as we see names and faces being crossed out in red, and radio static cutting into the broadcast as the sound of sirens close in on us. Heavy sighs are emitted, temples are rubbed, and we see a lone scientist stooping over a tape recorder with a defeated look in her eyes.
