Explore the Five Tastes of Dessert with Author Thalia Ho

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Thalia Ho, author of Wild Sweetness and creator of the award-winning blog Butter and Brioche, will explore the five tastes of dessert and beyond during a virtual discussion on Thursday, April 23, 2026 presented by the Ocean County Library. The event begins at 7:00pm.

Ho’s newest book Bittersweet: The Five Tastes of Dessert and Beyond explores the five tastes and distills their ability to transform desserts into something memorable. Bitter brings deep complexity, sweet tempers and comforts, sour surprises and brings things to life with citrus or tang, salt can offset or enhance, umami is strong and satisfies.

This lyrical and visually stunning cookbook offers more than 100 enthralling dessert recipes. With gripping prose, deep reflection, and hauntingly beautiful photographs, Thalia Ho shares inspired and inventive recipes to elevate what your last bite can be – adventurous, otherworldly, and unforgettable.

Thalia Ho’s work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and more. She has collaborated creatively with an array of brands, including Valrhona and Gucci, and has done work for radio, television, podcasts, and film. She currently resides in Australia but travels the world often in pursuit of sweetness.

Ocean County College Foundation to Host Symposium on Margaret Atwood's Impact

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- The Ocean County College Foundation will host a full day of conversations exploring the influence of writer Margaret Atwood on Thursday, April 23, 2026 on the College's main campus in Toms River. The symposium will feature a series of panel discussions, followed by a screening of the 2019 documentary "Margaret Atwood: A Word after a Word after a Word is Power." Afterwards, guests are invited to attend a livestream broadcast of Margaret Atwood's moderated conversation. (Tickets to the in-person talk are sold out at this time).
