Brookdale Leads in Interior Design and Brings Innovation to Beacon Hill Country Club

originally published: 01/05/2025

(MIDDLETOWN, NJ) -- Brookdale Community College's Interior Design Program has demonstrated its excellence again, earning accolades as the Best Interior Design Program in New Jersey, Top 3 in the Northeast, and #10 in the nation, according to Best Community Colleges.com. A recent collaboration with Beacon Hill Country Club showcased the program's remarkable talent, reinforcing the program's reputation for producing industry-ready professionals.

In a project that combined tradition with modernity, Brookdale Interior Design students were tasked with reimagining the entrance floor of Beacon Hill Country Club's historic clubhouse. The goal was to honor the club's rich legacy while introducing innovative elements that could enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal. The results exceeded expectations, as the designs seamlessly integrated historical charm with contemporary sensibilities.

"You didn't just redesign a lobby—you redefined the first impression of our club," remarked Richard A. White, Sr., president of the Beacon Hill Country Club Board of Trustees. His praise captured the essence of the transformative work led by Brookdale students.

The winning team, composed of Jacqueline Ferreira, Alexandra Keeling, Sarah Grego, and Lily Lehotsky, developed a concept titled Reimagined Boundaries. Their design featured luxurious, sustainable materials and a versatile layout that accommodated both social gatherings and private moments. Highlights included modular furniture for flexibility, innovative lighting to enhance ambiance, and an updated reception desk that served as a welcoming focal point.

"We wanted to define a new standard for this space by balancing comfort, innovation, and function," explained Alexandra Keeling. "Our goal was to make the lobby both luxurious and resource-efficient, honoring the history of Beacon Hill while meeting modern needs."

The team's thoughtful approach earned them the $1,000 first-place scholarship and accolades from the Beacon Hill board. "This project was more than just a design challenge—it was an opportunity to create something meaningful," added Lily Lehotsky. "Having our work recognized in this way is incredibly rewarding."

Jacqueline Ferreira, who recently won Silver in the student category at an American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) competition, brought her award-winning perspective to the project. "Working side by side with my talented peers to develop a cohesive concept for the lobby was both inspiring and rewarding," she shared. "I'm excited to bring the insights gained from this experience into my professional journey and continue reaching new milestones!"

Three runner-up teams also impressed with their innovative designs, each earning $500 scholarships for their creative concepts. Team A, composed of Magadalia Da Silva, Rubi Hoyos, Nicole Oleck, and Jazmine Marshall, focused on natural elements, featuring a wave-inspired ceiling and a meditation nook designed for relaxation. Team B, consisting of Jonathan Gabay, Alia Lorenzo, and Natalia Reinisz, delivered a tech-forward design incorporating a striking digital accent wall, golf-inspired furniture, and integrated charging stations. Team C, made up of Elizabeth Fisher, Anna Decker, Katelyn Duff, and Gianna Libretto, emphasized poetic elements with their design, which included a checkerboard ceiling, a creative built-in book and trophy case within the staircase, and a dynamic game space for social interaction.

The program's success stems from the dedication and expertise of its exceptional faculty and staff. Professor Celeste Chirichello, M.A., co-chairs the Design Department, which encompasses Architecture, Interior Design, and Graphic Design, while also serving as the Interior Design Coordinator. She also advises the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) student chapter and the campus center for the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). With 15 years of experience in high-end residential design, Professor Chirichello brings invaluable industry insights to the program.

The team collaborating at Beacon Hill also included Adjunct Instructor Jesse Cermak, a Brookdale alumnus and Parsons School of Design graduate who brings real-world expertise from his work designing hotels with Rose Ink Workshop. Learning Assistant Sarah Triolo, another Brookdale graduate now pursuing her bachelor's degree at Kean University, is instrumental in guiding students as they master industry-standard design software.

"This collaboration has been an incredible experience for our students," said Chirichello. "While we strive to provide meaningful experiences in the classroom, bringing students into the community elevates their learning to a whole new level. The hands-on process has been invaluable, from photographing and measuring the space to engaging with people and understanding their needs. It is truly inspiring to watch them take these real-world insights back to the classroom, complete their work, and present their designs. The scholarship is just the icing on the cake—this experience alone is transformative."

"Our faculty are deeply invested in our students' success, providing them with the tools to thrive in the competitive design industry," noted Dr. Katie Lynch, Brookdale's Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The collaboration with Beacon Hill Country Club exemplifies the strong community ties Brookdale fosters through its programs. This project follows successful partnerships between the college and Beacon Hill's Hospitality and Culinary programs, enriching both organizations.

"As both a member of Brookdale's Board of Trustees and Beacon Hill, I couldn't be prouder of the collaboration between these two organizations," said Tracey Abby White. "The creativity and professionalism demonstrated by the students are a testament to the exceptional quality of Brookdale's Interior Design Program. This project brought fresh, innovative ideas to Beacon Hill and gave students invaluable hands-on experience that will serve them well in their careers. Partnerships like this show the true power of community and education."

Rubi Hoyos, a student from a runner-up team, reflected on the program's impact: "Being part of Brookdale's Interior Design Program has opened so many doors. Thanks to the college's reputation, I am employed at R. Popovitch Builders, and I couldn't be more excited! The skills I learned at Brookdale give me the confidence to be the best designer I can be."

As Brookdale's Interior Design Program continues to lead in innovation and excellence, its graduates are shaping the future of design, blending creativity, tradition, and modernity to transform spaces and leave lasting impressions.
