BlowUpRadio.com's New & Notable NJ Music 5/8/23

By Lazlo

originally published: 05/08/2023

Lazlo, founder of BlowUpRadio.com (an online radio station based around New Jersey artists), shines a light on some of the many new releases from NJ based musicians each week with this column. This week Lazlo takes a look at releases by J Thoubbs, Out of Service, LIVIA, Vincent Brue, Bad News for Birds, and Bruce Tunkel.

J Thoubbs - "Ultimate Mixtape Volume 4". J Thoubbs is a very ecclectic artist, and while I am never quite sure what I am going to hear from him album to album, I've never been bored by his music.

His latest, "Ultimate Mixtape Volume 4", is a collection of alt-rock tunes, some with a more aggro side, others with a more pop vibe, and some venturing into prog-rock.

Out of Service - "Serenity Now". "Serenity Now" is a the beautiful first single from Out of Service's new album, "Reflections & Refractions", due this this summer. The rock band really gets in touch with the emo side on this lovely, melancholy, song.

LIVIA - "Unfind You". LIVIA is, "Classical pianist turned contemporary chamber pop singer/songwriter." The debut single, "Unfind You" is a beautiful, poetic song, with classic piano blended alternative balladry.

Vincent Brue - "VB". Vincent Brue's latest album, "VB", is a master class of witty, catchy, indie-alt-pop, from one of the best in the state.

Bad News for Birds - "Good Morning". Bad News for Birds bio says they are, "2 birds making dream pop tunes". They don't sound like birds (though their vocals are enchanting), but their debut single, "Good Morning", is a lovely dream pop tune.

Bruce Tunkel - "sixtyandthensome". Bruce Tunkel has been a mainstay in the New Jersey music scene for over 30 years (and his late 80's/early 90's band The Red House scored a #30 Billboard rock tracks hit with, "I Said A Prayer".

His latest album, "sixtyandthensome",  is full of emotionally stirring piano and guitar ballads, with some upbeat, earworm, pop-rockers too. The album is a masterpiece!

That's all for this week.
