(TENAFLY, NJ) -- ACC Gallery is proud to present In Repetition, a solo exhibition by mixed media artist Injoo Whang now through October 4, 2025. The show features Whang's latest works, including abstract works on paper and collages created with sumi ink and water-based mediums.
Inspired by architectural elements, Whang recomposes forms into intricate abstract compositions. Each piece begins with a single mark or paper cut-out, which she repetitively accumulates to form a larger whole. This approach is rooted in traditional Korean painting and calligraphy, where "gi (기)"—the infusion of energy—is cultivated through sustained repetition and spiritual practice. Similar to the traditional technique of layering thin, translucent pigments dozens of times to achieve depth and illumination, Whang builds meaning and presence through careful accumulation.
Through this meditative process, Whang explores the interplay between the individual and the collective, positive and negative space, and simplicity and complexity. The energy generated through repetition creates immersive abstract landscapes, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces shaped by collective existence.
Injoo Whang (b. 1977, Seoul, Korea) is a mixed-media artist whose work draws inspiration from architectural elements. Through repeated marks and layered gestures, she reconfigures them into geometric abstract works on paper and collages using sumi ink and water-based mediums.
She earned a BFA in Korean Traditional Painting from Hong-Ik University in Seoul before moving to the United States in 2002. In 2004, she received her MFA in Fine Art from Parsons School of Design in New York.
Whang's work has been exhibited at venues including the Queens Museum of Art (NY), LA Artcore (CA), McColl Center for Visual Art (NC), Lee Gallery at Clemson University (SC), and the Total Museum in Seoul. She has been awarded fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center (VT), the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts (NY), the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (MN), the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (NE), and PS122 (NY).
She currently works out of her studio at Camden FireWorks in Camden, NJ, and lives in Cherry Hill, NJ.
