originally published: 03/11/2024

(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Candy Darling’s passing, The ShowRoom, in collaboration with Asbury Book Cooperative, are proud to present a special screening of the acclaimed documentary Beautiful Darling on Thursday, March 21st, at 7:30pm. This screening, in conjunction with the release of Cynthia Carr’s definitive biography on the iconic figure, promises an evening of reflection, celebration, and appreciation for one of the most captivating personalities of the 20th century.

Candy Darling, born James Lawrence Slattery, remains an enduring symbol of beauty, courage, and unapologetic self-expression. As a transgender actress and Warhol Superstar, her impact on art, culture, and the LGBTQ+ community continues to reverberate to this day.

Beautiful Darling, directed by James Rasin, offers an intimate portrait of Candy’s life, exploring her journey from a young dreamer in Queens to an enigmatic muse in the heart of New York City’s avant-garde scene. Through rare archival footage, personal anecdotes, and interviews with those who knew her best, the film captures the essence of a woman who defied societal norms and blazed her own trail with unwavering grace.

Tickets for the screening are $20 and are available for purchase at showroomcinemas.com or in person at the box office. The ShowRoom, Asbury Park’s home to movies and more, is located at 707 Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Accompanying the screening is the release of Cynthia Carr’s highly anticipated biography, Candy Darling - Dreamer, Icon, Superstar, offering readers a deeper understanding of Candy Darling’s complex persona. Carr’s meticulous research and insightful prose illuminate the nuances of Darling’s life, shedding light on her triumphs, struggles, and enduring legacy. In addition, Cynthia will be providing a special pre-recorded introduction to the film and Asbury Book Cooperative will have copies of the book available for purchase at the screening.
