Lighthouse International Film Society to Screen "76 Days Adrift"

originally published: 09/18/2024

(LONG BEACH ISLAND & SPRING LAKE, NJ) -- Lighthouse International Film Society presents screenings of 76 Days Adrift with a Q&A with Director Joe Wein on September 19-20, 2024.  Screenings will take place at the Surf City Fire House on Thursday and Spring Lake Theatre on Friday.

It was the middle of the night in the middle of the ocean that a whale collided with a small sailboat.  Suffering catastrophic damage, within minutes the craft is swamped and will surely sink. Grabbing what he can, a solitary young sailor heaves an inflatable raft overboard and abandons the ship. 76 days adrift, where every wave tells a story of despair and the flicker of hope shines through the darkest moments.

For more than two months, alone and at the mercy of wind and wave, Steven Callahan finds a courage he never knew he had. Forced to confront his own shortcomings and limitations, he summons his inner strength, bonds with the natural world, and somehow survives.  This isn't just a documentary; it's a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

LIFS is screening the film on successive nights at two different venues. Thursday, September 19th on LBI at the Surf City Firehouse (713 Long Beach Blvd), and Friday, September 20th in Spring Lake at the Spring Lake Theatre (300 Madison Ave). Both showings at 7:30pm. Admission is $12 online and $15 at the door.  Tickets are available for purchase online. Admission is free for LIFSOCIETY members.

From executive producer Ang Lee, director of Life of Pi, the documentary, 76 Days Adrift is the gripping first-hand account of Callahan’s NYT best-selling novel Adrift: 76 Days Lost At Sea. Directed by Joe Wein, the film premiered at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival earning rave reviews and encore showings.

Authentically

Authentically beautiful feature Supporting Actresses screens at the 2025 New Jersey International Film Festival on June 7!

Supporting Actresses (Secundarias) is bound to be a favorite in the 2025 New Jersey International Film Festival. Everything in this beautifully executed film directed by Arturo Dueñas, is centered around a play (Cartas al Emperador, “Letters to the Emperor”) and its ensemble’s representation of it. The film title references the marginality of our main characters who are secondary actresses inside the play. The production of Cartas al Emperador positions each woman in support of the king’s story as the tangential, dramatic or comedic foil to the straight-man; all of them merely women who marked his life by visiting on his deathbed.
