"From Alchemy to Numinosity Art" Exhibit on View at Ramapo College to Have Artists

(MAHWAH, NJ) -- An unusual art exhibition exploring notions of alchemy and numinosity is on view in the Kresge and Pascal Galleries of the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College. From Alchemy to Numinosity features contemporary artists and collection loans, and continues on view through April 4. Numerous media are represented, which range from sculpture to Haitian Vodou flags to paintings. There will be a reception with artists’ talks on Monday, April 3 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

According to Director of the Art Galleries Sydney Jenkins, “This provocative exhibition developed from  conversations I had with sculptor Julie Nagle.  Nagle’s works explore similar themes and are prominently featured here in dialogue with works by the other artists. Various type of artistic practice are featured, from the “synthetic alchemy” constructions of renowned self-taught artist Emery Blagdon, to the large machine-obsessive kinetic sculpture of Josh Knoblick, to Ann LePore’s numinous Amulets for Introverts.”

In addition to Ramapo’s Bukstein and Rodman Collections, the exhibition also showcases special loans from the prestigious collections of Gardy St. Fleur of Brooklyn, NY, and Ed Gessen of St. Petersburg, FL.  Various regions are represented including Cuba, Haiti, Africa, India, and China among others.

Featured artists include: Juan Alsar, Emery Blagdon, Benoit, gwen charles, Victor Davson, Florine Démosthène, Michael Dominick, Edouard Duval-Carrié, LaFortune Felix, Sancilus Ishmael, Edger Jean-Louis, Serge Jolimeau, Jean Baptiste Jean Joseph, Josh Knoblick, Ann LePore, Julie Nagle, Philomé Obin, Antoine Oleyant, André Pierre, Roland Rockville, Jon Serl, Jackie Skrzynski, and Lydia Viscardi.

The Kresge and Pascal Galleries are located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 1:00pm-5:00pm and Wednesday, 1:00pm-7:00pm.
