ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...8/18/16

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 08/18/2016

>He has performed or worked with the likes of Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Vince Gill, Joe Perry, Joe Walsh, Edgar Winter and a host of others, yet Paul Nelson is often overlooked by those outside of the recording and music industry.

This engaging, talented guitarist is also a top notch producer, performer and manager and is currently on what is perhaps one of the best rolls of his career. "I signed with Sony," said Nelson with enthusiasm. "I'm getting ready to go back out on the road with the Paul Nelson Band to support my new CD, "Badass Generation." The album is a combination of '70's style jam rock, blues and a mix of electric and semi-acoustic material and my band is just incredible. I've got Morten Fredheim on vocals, bassist Christopher Alexander and drummer Chris Reddan and the caliber of their talent is just outstanding."

Along with the new record and alliance with Sony, Nelson is still performing and touring with the Johnny Winter All Star Band and this Saturday August 20 Nelson and his band mates will be at the New Hope Winery in New Hope, PA. "There's going to be a lot at this show, a tribute to Johnny, which I've done before and I've been joined by people like Edgar Winter and Earl Slick and so many others; I never know who is going to want to perform with us. There will be some classic Johnny songs, lots of new stuff from his last album and maybe from my new one; the night is definitely going to be a great one."

Touring isn't all that keeps Nelson busy. Being a producer for artists like Winter, James Montgomery and blues master Joe Louis Walker have kept him on his game and his schedule full. "I just produced James Montgomery's record and it came out really well. He used horns and the band was slamming. I also just finished up Joe Louis Walker's latest. He and I are supposed to perform on the White House lawn in September; we're pretty excited about that."

Recent fruits of his production labor were the Johnny Winter discs, "Roots"  and the eventual Grammy winner "Step Back," as well as being a guitarist and a songwriter on the Grammy nominated,"I'm A Bluesman." "I think," said a reflective Nelson; "I think that Johnny winning that Grammy showed that he was back. Johnny and I performed with the "Late Night" band when the "Roots" album was out and then on Jimmy Kimmel to promote "Step Back;" Lady Gaga was also on that program. I remember her coming out in a dress made of coffee filters (laughs) but sure enough, she asked for a picture with Johnny."

Nelson also executive produced and appears in "Down and Dirty," a movie about his late boss, friend and stage mate. "I think this film is an important piece of rock and blues history," he stated confidently. "This really is a great rock doc and I'm proud to say that this film shows what I did for Johnny. It shows how I got him off of methadone and helped him get his health back and get back to being Johnny again; it's really a good story and I'm glad to help tell it."

With the current success of "Badass Generation" comes an even more hectic schedule and even though he's currently just returned from the road; Nelson is not letting any moss grow under his feet. "Ya' know, I'm really happy with this album so far; it's doing well. I plan on going back on the road, touring here and then maybe over to Japan because the album is doing very good over there. I've got a "Blues Cruise" in October with Los Lobos, Buddy Guy and Warren Haynes; we're cruising to Jamaica. I've been asked to produce another project based on the music of Jr. Wells; so I'm going to be busy but that's fine with me."

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
