ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...8/1017

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 08/10/2017

"We were on the road since May 23, I just got home yesterday," said a relaxed John Corabi of The Dead Daisies as he elaborated on the next leg of their tour and an upcoming August 16 show at Asbury Park, NJ venue House of Independents"We've got some time off, it feels a bit weird (laughs)."

The Dead Daisies are a combined force of music veterans who have come together to form a hard rockin' quintet and so far the results, even to the band, have been a pleasant surprise. "I've got to be honest, this thing is really growing," says Corabi. "The response to us and the tour is growing; overseas it's been insane! We've played some of their big festivals, we did a club run, we were in Europe, we've got Japan, South America, no matter where we've been the response has been amazing, it's great!"

Since their inception in 2012, the band has featured some of hard rock's royalty such as Dizzy Reed and Darryl Jones. The current version, comprised of Corabi (Motley Crue/The Scream), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake/Dio), Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne/Billy Idol/Foreigner) and David Lowy (Mink/Red Phoenix) has slid right into their predecessors shoes without a hitch.

Last year's live release called, "Live & Louder" was a direct result of their fan base clamoring for something that represented the band at its best and that's their live performances. "We recorded it last year," explained Corabi. "Our fans are really amazing and they were saying to us that the studio stuff is great but our live shows are always special. Everywhere we went people were asking us when we were going to do a live disc or DVD and then Dizzy got called back to Guns N' Roses. We had already been touring for the other two studio albums we've done and with a new member we didn't want to push anyone into the studio right away. So while breaking him in, this gave him the chance to get comfortable with the material and the rest of the guys time to collect their thoughts. However, we did record the old Grand Funk Railroad song, "We're An American Band" and we released it on the Fourth of July and its already gotten over a million views; we're very happy about that. The thing about this band, I guess Rich Fortus (Guns N' Roses/Psychedelic Furssaid it best"It's honest." "It's like life, everybody works in a different way but when we come together it's special. There's no over analyzing in this band or over processing. We realize that not everybody is going to like every song we play but we do our best every time we go on stage. We really are an old school type of band. MTV doesn't have music, our radio support is nil, so we're like old time politicians; we're on the road pressing flesh, kissing babies and getting close to the people."

With "Live & Louder" fading in the rearview mirror, the current lineup has an eye towards the studio this fall and the way they conduct their recording is not only refreshing but expedient. Corabi proudly explains the band's philosophy and methods. "We're looking at November 1 to go back in the studio. the great thing about this band is that we have five incredible songwriters so any one of us can write a song and bring it to the band. Sometimes we just have riffs and we'll develop material from there; we've all got a ton of riff ideas. Usually, a week or two before we go into the studio we'll get together and write the tunes that we are going to record, this group is incredibly fast. Motley Crue would take one to two years to record, mix and master an album, we have it all done, mixed and mastered in about a month (Laughs)."

As the next round of, "The Dirty Dozen Tour" kicks off, they find themselves in Asbury Park, NJ at a vastly popular new venue called, "House of Independents." Opening up the show and undertaking their first ever U.S. tour are The Dives, a group based out of New York City"We're hoping for a great show in Asbury Park," says Corabi with confidence. "Brian is a Jersey guy and I'm from Philly, as is Doug. I cut my teeth, so to speak along the Jersey shore. Even though Doug and I are both from there, we have no Philadelphia shows booked; so if you want to see us you've got to make the trip this Wednesday. This is our first headlining tour run in the United States so for now we're just kind of dipping our toes in the water to see how it goes. I think between us and the Dives being close to their home we'll do well."

Another way to obtain tickets and be entered into a drawing for a free meet and greet with the band prior to the Asbury Park, NJ show, is to tune into, "Danny Coleman's Rock On Radio" this Sunday between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. EST on www.PANJRadio.com  to win tickets and become eligible for the meet and greet.

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
