Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...1/30/20

By Danny Coleman

"We've been together for 17 years, we've been together a long time," says guitarist/vocalist Pete Bernhard. "I was a teenager when I started playing out live by myself and then in a few punk bands and then I started The Devil Makes Three in my early twenties."

The Devil Makes Three are a trio comprised of Bernhard, guitarist Cooper McBean and bassist Lucia Turino who perform a unique blend of what has been described as, "Wandering folk, Delta blues, whiskey-soaked ragtime and reckless rock 'n' roll," while some have claimed that it borders on bluegrass as well.

Even though their latest release, "Chains Are Broken" has broken into Billboard's Top 200 Bluegrass Charts, Bernhard set the record straight and explained the band's style prior to a recent show in Jersey City, NJ at White Eagle Hall; a stop on this tour which they are headlining unlike the previous times they've been on the road in support of the album.

"I guess you could say we kind of are supporting the new album but we haven't done much touring on our own this year. We put out the record then we toured with the Drop Kick Murphys in Europe, then Social Distortion and Flogging Molly in the States and we didn't really do any of our own touring last year; so this is the first tour where it's our own full set in quite a while, probably at least half a year. We had a blast on both of those tours, they were great and it was cool because we got in front of a totally difference audience and it was a lot of fun but this is kind of our first headlining tour we've done since we put out the new record. We've got a guy named Matt Heckler opening up for us, we met him when we were on tour with The Lost Dog String Band. He does kind of a more traditional thing than we do; he plays fiddle and banjo and sings, he's a really talented guy."

"Technically we're really not bluegrass, we do have similar instrumentation but what we do is more akin to old blues or old time music than it is bluegrass. Bluegrass people make a severe distinction between the two so I always like to say so. Also, we were all punk rockers when we were younger who played in punk bands as well which is why the Dropkicks and the Social Distortion Flogging Molly thing was fun; I grew up going to see the Dropkicks in Boston because I'm originally from Southern Vermont right on the Massachusetts border. We kind of take old traditional American music and try to do it with a punk rock spirit."

The January 19 show in Jersey City was part of a tour that features a lineup change; out for this go around is bassist Turino and they've added a drummer; creating a new rhythm section which is working well as the band performs as much of their catalog as time will allow.

"It had been a while since we played in New Jersey except for when we played  with Social Distortion in Asbury Park at the Stone Pony on the outside stage; it wasn't our show so we just did an opening set for that one but this time and on this tour we are using a different bass player, our long time bassist Lucia Turino decided that she wanted to take some time off the road; she's been playing with us for 17 years and decided that she wanted to take a break," he explained with mixed emotions."Basically we didn't know what to do at first but luckily we found our friend Morgan Swain who played with a band called Brown Bird who we have toured with a lot; they're out of Providence, Rhode Island. She was looking for work and she's already a friend, she's actually played with us on multiple tours playing fiddle but not bass; she played bass in her old band. So we were able to find a pretty good solution to the problem; Lucia sort of left the band of her own accord but she's welcome back at any time. There's a possibility that she might come out on a tour and sit in with us or she might do a tour, it's really up to her."

"We'll be travelling with me, Cooper, MorganEve and drummer, Stefan Amidon and he sings too. When you come to see us I think that you can expect to hear a lot of old material and a lot of the new material too; we always like to do as much as we possibly can wherever we go. We really squeeze it in; somehow we've always been associated with jam bands and none of our songs are more than three minutes long (laughs). Punk is what we grew up on, so you can expect to hear a lot of our old stuff and our new stuff; as much as we can cram in."

With a hectic tour schedule which includes six cities in eight days covering four states from February 1 to February 8 before taking more than six weeks off and resuming on March 26 in California; the band plans on possibly tipping their hat to one of their influences while adding to their discography as they are in the beginning stages of their next release.

"The Ramones most definitely; we're actually talking about covering one of their songs but we haven't gotten it together yet. We have a lot of live records, probably six studio records and three or four live albums; we like to record our live shows it's just something we've been doing for years. Our last live record was "Live at Red Rocks" which was a really great gig and a really great show, we had a blast at that one but we're currently working on material for our next studio record."
