Plainfield Symphony Orchestra Presents Pianist Robert Taub in Rare U.S. Appearance

originally published: 04/10/2019

(PLAINFIELD, NJ) -- The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra welcomes internationally acclaimed pianist Robert Taub back for a return performance at the final concert of the 99th season on Saturday, April 27 at 7:00pm. Under the baton of Maestro Charles Prince, Taub and the Plainfield Symphony will offer Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466 and Alexander Scriabin’s Symphony No. 5, “Prometheus: The Poem of Fire”, Op.60.  The concert takes place at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church (716 Watchung Avenue) in Plainfield, NJ.  Admission is $65 reserved seating/$45 general admission / $30 seniors & students

Hailed as a “visionary virtuoso” by The New Yorker magazine, Robert Taub has performed as guest soloist with the world's leading orchestras and conductors and presented solo concerts in the Great Performers Series at New York's Lincoln Center, and in many other major series and festivals. Widely known for his performances and recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas, he has also recorded the complete Sonatas of Scriabin. A former Artist in Residence at Princeton University, Taub is now Music Director for the Arts Institute at University of Plymouth, U.K.

“We were delighted to have Robert Taub open our 98th season in October 2017, and we’re even more fortunate to have him at the conclusion of our 99th season,” said Charles Prince. “The Scriabin work is rarely performed in the U.S, and this is an amazing opportunity to hear the foremost interpreter of this work performing with the PSO.”

“At this concert we will also announce the program for the 2019-2010 season, PSO’s 100th,” noted Prince. “This centennial season will offer concert goers a taste of PSO’s history as well as internationally known guest performers, a hallmark of our symphony.”

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor will open the April 27th program. Historically the most popular of Mozart’s keyboard concertos, it is one of only two written in a minor key and the most darkly dramatic and impassioned.

Scriabin’s Symphony No. 5, “Prometheus: The Poem of Fire”, Op.60 is a complex, luxuriant work for large orchestra that opens with its famous “mystic chord,” symbolizing primordial chaos. First performed in 1911, the work combines mysticism and ecstasy and links the realistic with the supernatural.

The annual Conductors Circle after party following the concert honors Peter Lomonaco and Phil Schafer for their leadership and support of PSO. The after party will be held from 9:00pm-11:00pm at Giovanna’s Restaurant in Plainfield. Tickets for both the concert and the program are available online

Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra is New Jersey’s oldest community symphony and the third oldest continuously operating community symphony in the United States. The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra represents the highest standard in musical excellence in programs designed to educate and uplift local audiences. Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. Additional funding has been received from a 2018 HEART (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) Grant from the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
