(NEWARK, NJ) -- Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced that he has appointed Sondra D. Roberts as Communications Director beginning on January 6, 2020. In Ms. Roberts' new role, she will be responsible for communication strategy for the City of Newark and the Mayor, internal and external communications, public and media relations, leading the press information office, and overseeing the City's television studio (Channel 78).
With nearly 20 years of experience in communication and organizational management, Ms. Roberts most recently served as chief strategist at GLOBALGOOD Public Relations, and managed the New York City operations for Cornell University's S.C. Johnson College of Business. Ms. Roberts has also worked in entertainment, fashion, non-profit, and on political campaigns. She earned a Master of Science degree in Public Relations and Corporate Communication from New York University, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from University at Albany, and is a published author.
"I believe that Sondra will bring the fresh perspective and skill needed to improve the way we communicate in all areas. Not only does she have the experience but she also has the compassion and pedigree," said Mayor Baraka.
Mark Di Ionno, interim communications director, will continue to serve in the Press Information Office and support Ms. Roberts during the transition. After the transition, Mr. Di Ionno will return to the Department of Public Safety where he will continue to lead the Office of Public Information. Crystal Rosa will continue to serve as Press Secretary.
