Makin Waves Scene Report with Deal Casino, Molly Rhythm, Hi-Tide Recordings and more

Deal Casino will celebrate the release of their latest EP, “Isadora Duncan,” on June 16 at House of Independents with Well Wisher, Sonic Blume and Haunt Club. Photo by Bob Makin.

Also featured in the weekly return of the Makin Waves Scene Report are Inventure, latewaves, VANISH, The Stolen, Rhyme & Reason Records and BlowUpRadio.com’s ‘Rock Against Hate’ compilation.

Isadora Duncan was a pioneer of modern dance and is the title of the sixth release by Deal Casino, who’ll celebrate on June 16 at House of Independents in their home base of Asbury Park with their friends in Haunt Club, Well Wisher, and Sonic Blume. Also coming up in support of the artistic yet accessible four-song effort will be dates with fellow Asbury act Parlor Mob on June 19 at Mercury Lounge, New York City, and June 21, Ortlieb’s, Philadelphia.

Having seen them four times this year and presented them once, I can say that Deal Casino are one of New Jersey’s best live bands with a powerful, expressive show that combines music technology and stage effects with passionate songs and performances. If you haven’t seen them yet, I highly recommend you do.

Deal Casino’s schedule also includes a hot spot on Sept. 29 at Sea.Hear.Now Festival, which also will feature Jack Johnson, Incubus, Social Distortion, The Front Bottoms, Parlor Mob, Battery Electric and much more. Look for a Record of the Week here on June 14 ...

Congrats to Inventure, latewaves, Molly Rhythm, The Stolen, and VANISH, who are among the Jersey bands tapped to play the local Full Sail Stage at the last-ever Warped Tour. Inventure, Molly Rhythm, and Vanish will play July 13 at BB&T Pavilion in Camden and latewaves and The Stolen will play July 14 at PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel.

After three EPs since 2013, Asbury grind-core act Inventure just self-released their full-length debut, “Sociopath.” In support of it, they will tour with New York’s S’efforcer. Dates include May 24, Cherry Street Station, Wallingford, Conn.; May 25, The Champ, Lenoyne, Pa.; May 26, Championship Bar, Trenton; May 27, Stage at Vapez, Gainesville, Va.; May 28, Basement Transmissions, Erie, Pa., and May 30, The Sanctuary, Detroit.

Trenton-based female-fronted horn-driven alt-rockers Molly Rhythm have some other sweet gigs coming up. They’ll also play June 8, HH Ranch, Philadelphia, with New York’s Funkrust Brass Band, hardcore Philly anarchists Cage Fight, and Philly synth-rockers Blank Pill; June 23, Mill Hill Basement, Trenton, with Canadian punks Bucky Harris, Philly punks The Lamplighters, Philly punk-popsters The Up, Up, Ups and New Brunswick punks Erotic Novels; June 29, Bushwick Public Ice, Brooklyn, with Bucky Harris, BK pop-punks Cold Wrecks, and reunited Wondercave recording act Pocketpool; July 14, Makin Waves’ Trenton Makes Takeover, Asbury Park Brewery, with Hub City Stompers, The Cryptkeeper Five, Experiment 34, and Chalk & the Beige Americans, and Sept. 14 and 15, Le Deluge, Quebec, with The Queers, Lost Loce, Tail Light Rebellion, Cirrhose et Cendrier and much more.

Outerloop recording act VANISH are readying a follow-up to last year’s label debut, “From Sheep to Wolves.” They also can be seen May 26 at The Barbary with University Drive, Crimson Creek, This Curse, and Counterfeit Culture. Meanwhile, Old Bridge alt-rockers The Stolen continue to work hard behind their new single/video, “Overboard.” Immediately following their Warped show, The Stolen will embark on a tour with Nashville-based Good Time recording act MILKK. The eight-day jaunt will take them to the Midwest and South before heading back up the East Coast on July 24 to Philamoca, Philadelphia, and July 25, Sunnyvale, Brooklyn, where Philly’s FV will be added to the bill.

Asbury faves latewaves recently dropped a new video, “Jezebel,” from last year’s local smash, “Partied Out,” on New Brunswick-based Panic State Records. Since that release, the punk-fueled trio have constantly been on the road. Other upcoming dates include June 21, Crossroads, Garwood, with Map of Rome, Old Currents, Champ and Spice Weasel.

Inspired by a dream of Elvis Presley in 1995, Igor Yuzov fled the former Soviet Union -- where rock ‘n’ roll was illegal -- to the streets of sunny Santa Monica, Calif. A dozen albums and a million touring miles later, Igor & Red Elvises bring the party to the historic Wonder Bar in Asbury Park for Hi-Tide Recordings’ Summer Kickoff on May 26. The show follows the band’s spring tour with Reverend Horton Heat. Sharing the bill will The Brigantines and Plato Zorba, both of whom feature members of Asbury Park Surf Music Festival favorites Black Flamingos. Plato Zorba are Hi-Tide label mates with Black Flamingos and include their guitarist Robbie Butkowski, while The Brigantines feature Flamingos drummer Vincent Minervino, co-founder of Hi-Tide and Asbury Park Surf Music Festival.

Rhyme & Reason Records’ latest releases are by popular Brooklyn-based indie acts Red Baraat and pronoun. A star of last year’s South by Southwest Festival, pronoun is back with “wrong,” the one-woman indie-rock band’s second single from a forthcoming full-length debut. A follow-up to the well-received 2016 debut EP, “There’s no one new around you,” the as of yet untitled LP will drop by year’s end. South Amboy-based BlowUpRadio.com has released the “Rock Against Hate Volume 2” compilation featuring dozens of New Jersey musical acts. The $10 charity collection will benefit Planned Parenthood and The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ teens and young adults. Original songs by A Halo Called Fred, Above The Moon, Ancient Babies, Colie Brice, Tris McCall and more showcase activism, social issues or protest.

BlowUpRadio.com has raised money for many nonprofit associations, including Spondylitis Association Of America, the beneficiary of the annual Banding Together series. On June 2, BlowUpRadio.com will host a benefit webathon, “Rock The Lup,” for the Lupus Research Alliance.
