Makin Waves’ Record of the Week: Glazer’s “On a Prairie, Live in the Dirt”

By Bob Makin

originally published: 08/31/2017

This week’s Record of the Week is Glazer’s full-length debut “On a Prairie, Live in the Dirt” on the new indie State Champion Records formed by Screaming Females bassist King Mike. The band will celebrate with a New Brunswick house show on Sept. 3, and they also will play the ROCK New Brunswick Warmup Party on Sept. 9 at Volume IV also New Brunswick.

Glazer’s “On a Prairie, Live in the Dirt” is their full-length debut album for State Champion Records, a very happy home for Jeff Hersch. The Glazer drummer’s other band, Decoration, also is on State Champion, which is owned by Screaming Females bassist King Mike. Hersch is roommates with some of the State Champion staff. He must be a pretty good one to land two bands on the burgeoning indie label.

“On a Prairie” is Glazer’s third release following EPs in 2014 and 2016. The 10-song collection’s standout tracks, are the blistering “People’s Monument” and the sweltering “Working Man’s Dog,” both of which feature guitar solos that would have made fellow New Brunswick grungesters Nudeswirl proud.

Glazer will celebrate the release of “On a Prairie, Live in the Dirt” on Sept. 3 at a New Brunswick basement show. They’ll also play Sept. 9 at Volume IV also in New Brunswick with label mates Spowder. The latter gig is part of the weekend-long ROCK New Brunswick festival.

After a Sept. 15 show at Jungeon in Rutherford, Glazer expect to tour again, so be on the lookout for a show near you. If you like modern-day grunge with noisy, screeching, squealing guitar and loud, thunderous rhythms, this is your cup of meat, so don’t miss it, especially with the similar-sounding Spowder on Sept. 9.
