Lauren Whearty To Present Lecture At MCCC

originally published: 11/11/2018

(WEST WINDSOR, NJ) -- An artist’s unique approach to creating art will be the topic of an upcoming lecture at Mercer County Community College (MCCC). “Pieces of Things” is the title of a lecture by Lauren Whearty, a painter and co-director at the artist-run gallery Ortega y Gasset Projects in Brooklyn, which will be delivered on Wednesday, November 14 at noon in the Communications Building, Room 109. Her talk is part of MCCC’s fall 2018 Distinguished Lecture Series at the West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Whearty will discuss the use of ‘stuff’ in her painting, which offers a commentary on her relationship with imagery/representation and abstraction. She will also discuss the interpretation of objects-as-characters, figurative elements and visual art historical quotes.

Whearty’s artistic career has taken her through the northeastern US. She received the Ellen Batttell Stoeckel fellowship to attend Yale’s Summer School of Art in Norfolk, CT, attended Vermont Studio Center with a fellowship and has held exhibits at venues in Philadelphia, PA.

Currently, Whearty is a Visiting Associate Professor at Lehigh University. Previously she taught at her alma maters, Ohio State University and Tyler School of Art at Temple University, as well as at the University of the Arts and Hussian College of Art. Whearty received her BFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, MFA in Painting from Ohio State University, her M.A in English Literature from Seton Hall University, and her MFA from Rutgers University.
