Danger In New Brunswick

originally published: 09/20/2015

(New Brunswick, NJ) -- On September 15, the State Theatre hosted a death-defying Submerged escape stunt in advance of The Supernaturalists™ tour which launched with four performances from September 18-20 at the State Theatre. Supernaturalists show creator Criss Angel was in New Brunswick to introduce the demonstration performed by Spencer Horsman.

Just over 2 and half minutes into the stunt—following the shackling and locking of Spencer’s hands and feet, his submersion into a 30 inch plexiglass cube filled with 100 gallons of water, and then locked by bars across the top of the tank--the stunt’s emcee Landon Swank (also a Supernaturalists performer) addressed the crowd saying that Spencer had hit the dangerous mark of 2.5 minutes where the human body starts to shut down. Soon after, Spencer, who had nearly finished the escape, had trouble with the last lock. It was at this point that the crane quickly lowered the tank (which was suspended from a crane 16 feet above the street, in complete view of the public) and Spencer was pulled out.

New Brunswick EMTs who were on site for this dangerous stunt came to Spencer’s aid and transported the performer to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital for evaluation. Spencer was held for evaluation and tests, and should be released from the hospital later this evening.  Horsman is expected to make a full recovery.

“We are thrilled that Criss Angel was able to come to New Brunswick to help kick off the tour of The Supernaturalists™ at the State Theatre,” said Brian O’Boyle, State Theatre Vice President of Programming & Marketing.

“Thank you to the State Theatre and thousands of people that showed up for this demonstration. I am sorry that the outcome was not as planned, and we continue to await Spencer’s evaluation. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers,” says Criss.
