Breana Sena Named State Champion At 2018 NJ Poetry Out Loud State Finals

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Breana Sena, a student from Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School in Jersey City, was named State Champion at the 2018 New Jersey Poetry Out Loud (NJ POL) State Finals competition, part of the national poetry recitation program. The state finals took place Monday at The Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. Ms. Sena will now move on to represent New Jersey at the national finals in Washington, DC to compete against champions from every state and territory, all vying for the national title and the chance to win prizes including college scholarships.

POL is a national poetry recitation program through which students learn to perform great works of classical and contemporary poetry. The State Finals is the culmination of a statewide contest that began in the fall and included nearly 20,000 New Jerseystudents from over 150 high schools. Students competed first at the classroom and school level, and then at the regional level to determine the 12 finalists who would move on to Monday's competition.

Along with Ms. Sena, Maya Vuchic, from The Kent Place School in Summit, earned the title of State Runner-Up. Following is a list of the 12 student finalists: Annaya Baynes, The Pingry School (Basking Ridge); Ellie Culin, Madison High School; Jessica D'Agostino, Holmdel High School; Arianna Diaz, Plainfield Academy for the Arts & Advanced Studies; Isis Henderson, Villa Victoria Academy (Ewing); Rida Qureshi, Northern Valler Regional HS at Old Tappan; Breana Sena, Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School (Jersey City); Arya Singh, The Lawrenceville School; Madhavi Steinert, Perf. Arts Academy/Ocean County Voc. Tech. School (Lakehurst); Maya Vuchic, The Kent Place School (Summit); Samantha Brandt, Cedar Creek High School (Egg Harbor City); and Joel Vazquez, Mainland Regional High School (Linwood).

Now in its 13th year, POL was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and is carried out in partnership with the State Arts Agencies around the country. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts runs the year-long NJPOL in partnership with Writers Theatre of NJ and the ArtPride NJ Foundation. The program is administered with a host of regional partners including the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, Rutgers Camden Center for the Arts, Mayo Performing Arts Center, South Orange Performing Arts Center, Count Basie Theatre, Appel Farm Arts & Music Center and CavanKerry Press.

Interview with Damian Rucci
Damian Rucci is a poet from Keyport, New Jersey.  His first full length book is forthcoming. Being a poet is never easy and over the summer he was able to take part in an arts residency in the midwest.  Since we know many artists not only dream of doing such a thing, but have no idea how to make it possible we thought we’d learn more from Rucci about the experience.
PODCAST: Maria Mazziotti Gillan At The Dodge Poetry Festival
(NEWARK, NJ) -- The Dodge Poetry Festival is the largest poetry event in North America. Paterson-based poet Maria Mazziotti Gillan will be reading on Thursday and Friday of the four-day festival taking place October 18-21 in Newark. Maria is the force behind the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College, and the author of more than 20 books of and about poetry. Her poems are about her life, including her strong memories of childhood in Paterson’s Italian immigrant community. She likes to talk about the “cave,” that place of memories and feelings inside us all that the best poetry takes us back to. Producer Susan Wallner spoke to Maria Mazziotti Gillan at her home in Hawthorne, a suburb of Paterson.
Street Poet Review
Underground poets are about to roar. Street Poet Review, a new online journal being launched by Damian Rucci in February, will let them roar as loud as they want.  The goal is to give a voice to those who are currently silenced by existing journals. Rucci understands their silence because his work has been silenced many times as well.
My Redemption
Every poster, DVD cover, and Wikipedia page shows that epic moment in Shawshank Redemption when Andy is kneeling in the water and the rain looking up at the sky and his moment of complete freedom after 19 years and the jail in the distance. People want to feel like that.
