(BELMAR, NJ) -- Little Italy comes to the Jersey Shore as Belmar celebrates the Feast of San Gennaro with two days of food, fun and music filling the borough's Main Street on Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th, from 11 am until 6 pm.
The festivities begin with a Mass celebrated in Italian at the Church of St. Rose on 7th Avenue. Following the Mass, the traditional procession carrying the statue of San Gennaro will proceed down Main Street, led by this year's honorees: Daughter of San Gennaro Carol Cupoli, Son of San Gennaro Father David J. Baratelli, Italian-American Businesswoman of the Year Michele DeCarlo of DeCarlo Fitness, and Italian-American Businessman of the Year George Andretta of Pete & Elda's in Neptune City.
Main Street between 10th and 12th Streets will be lined with stands of mouth-watering Italian delicacies, market items and crafters, with foods from Ma's Italian Specialties, Tony's Italian Sausage, Gaetano's, Giovanni's Mobile Pizzeria, Crespella's and many more. Check out the latest Jeeps from World Jeep, ideas for your fall home improvement plans, and the latest in health care options at Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NJ's "Blue to You" van. The festival's beer and wine tent will feature Barefoot Wines, Peroni, Leinenkugel Oktoberfest and more.
Those who like a competitive edge to their eating will want to sign up for Ma's Cannoli Eating Contest, taking place at 1 pm on Saturday. Sign up at the Ma's Italian Specialty booth for your shot at the trophy. On Sunday, cheer on your favorites as Mayor Matt Doherty leads a team of friends and luminaries in the second annual San Gennaro Pasta Eating Contest, taking place at 1:00 pm on the main stage.
There will be dancing in the streets as the strolling musicians of the Metropolitan Festival Band entertain the crowds on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am until 1 pm. On Saturday, students from Dance Theatre Project will perform on stage at noon, while local favorite Bobby Ballack takes the stage at 2 pm on Saturday and returns for another show at 11:00 am on Sunday. Jump, jive and swing with Paolo and Laurentina on Sunday as they lead a partnering swing dance class at 1:30 and showcase their skills to the sounds of the City Rhythm Orchestra throughout the afternoon.
The Belmar Feast of San Gennaro is proudly presented by the Belmar Tourism Commission and Spark Market Solutions, LLC, with sponsor support from Barefoot Wines, World Jeep, Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NJ, and more. The festival is free and open to the public; food prices vary by vendor. Avoid traffic and parking worries: NJ TRANSIT's North Jersey Coast Line's Belmar stop is just a block from all the fun.
