The play takes place in 1962 Baltimore where the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her 'do!
Jersey Shore musician Jo Wymer is among the cast members for this production. Jo Wymer, an award-winning and Grammy nominated musician, is among the cast members for this production.� New Jersey Stage caught up with the Jersey Shore based artist to talk about the play.
What role do you play in HAIRSPRAY?
I have the Principal of Patterson Park High, The Gym Teacher, and the Matron roles - all of the Lucille Ball ensemble roles.
This is the first time you're performing with your son. How has it been during the rehearsals? Is this something you've wanted for a while?
I have always wanted to perform on the theater stage with him. He has a learning disability, but the stage comes so natural for him. I am learning so much from him. The theater stage is less comfortable than the musician's stage for me, but we both are having a ball.
Most people know you from your music, but I know you've been acting for a while now. Tell me about some of your other roles.
I have been away from the theater stage for about 25 years. Recently the roles I have been getting are the more comedic ensemble roles. I really don't have the time for a lead role with 60+ music and vocal students and the writing music for tv and film takes time and energy. I have been in THE FULL MONTY, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, and now HAIRSPRAY. Some of the past roles I have played have been the same role over and over. I was RIZZO in GREASE 6 times and Ms. Hannigan in ANNIE 3 times. Both were enjoyable, but now I would love to play other roles like Mame and Rose in Gypsy. There are so many non-musical roles I'd like to do as well. Roles like Kate or Blanche in Brighton Beach Memoirs. I have personal list I am working through but my recent health issues have set me back a bit. As long as I have the music and the theater in my life it seems to drive me forward creatively as well as mentally. The staff at the Algonquin is very nurturing with returning actors or new actors and they do a great job with helping me move forward with the theater work.
What about your son, has he been in many plays before?
My son has been in quite a few plays. He goes to Howell High School and is part of the Fine and Performing Arts Center which he had to audition for. He is in the film and video program. He did audition for the acting program as well and go in, but chose to learn the other side of the camera as well. He takes private acting, singing and dancing lessons and has had several lead roles in his school and in community theater as well. He is very talented - he also has Asperger Syndrome with is a High Functioning form of Autism but never lets that get in the way of his creativity. He really is amazing.
What are your thoughts about HAIRSPRAY as a play and the original film?
Well, both movie versions of Hairspray were not that good in my humble opinion. There were some great moments but the dialogue is just not that strong. While the music, on the other hand, is great and I think that was why I wanted to audition. The Broadway Musical was way more enjoyable and entertaining to watch. I think Ian Moore (the director of our show) is really under some time constraints going from auditions to opening night in less than 4 weeks, but his vision is great with the scene and roles and it has been a great experience for me all around.
Finally, what are some plays you'd love to be part of in the future?
There are so many plays that would have wonderful roles for this aging - female - overweight actress/musician. There are a few stages I would like to grace - such as the Count Basie - either in an acting role or as a musician - and Paper Mill Playhouse... in time I am sure. What I do know is that my confidence level is getting better as I get back on the theater stage. I just have to keep moving forward and always STAND AND DELIVER and never break a leg!
