UCPAC Hosts Free Workshop For Teaching Art To Blind And Low Vision Individuals

(RAHWAY, NJ) — On Saturday, June 6 from 11:00 a.m.-noon, artist Sandra Frank of Westfield will offer a free workshop for those who wish to make art instruction accessible to individuals who are blind or have low vision. 

The workshop takes place at UCPAC's Hamilton Stage, 360 Hamilton Street, Rahway, and outlines simple, fun techniques and materials that can be used in the teaching process. No prior art or teaching experience is necessary. Participants must call (732) 499-8226 to reserve a spot.


Ms. Frank has been teaching art and music to individuals and groups for 25 years. In addition to working with the blind, she teaches art to those with Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Huntington's Disease.


The workshop is part of a month-long art exhibit sponsored by Union County Performing Arts Center showcasing the work of 6 blind and low vision artists:  Tamilah AlexanderAaron ElmowitzJon GabryAlicia LiptscherNarcissa Lopez and Diane Robinson.

Limited Sight / Unlimited Vision runs June 5-25, 2015 in the lobby of RSI Bank, 1500 Irving Street in the heart of Rahway Arts District, with an opening reception Friday, June 5 from 4-7 p.m.

Limited Sight / Unlimited Vision is presented by Union County Performing Arts Center & LuceGroup with funding from William G. & Helen C. Hoffman Foundation, Caleb C. Pruden Trust and RSI Bank.

Limited Sight / Unlimited Vision offers an exceptional collation of art from a very unique creative perspective,” says Lawrence E. McCullough, executive director of Union County Performing Arts Center. 

“As Henry Ward Beecher said, ‘Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.’”   

The exhibit will also premiere a 40-minute video produced by award-winning filmmaker Jim Luce that highlights each artist and explores how artists with blindness or low vision engage in the creative process and connect to the world.
