RVCC to Present Women's Suffrage Film Series

originally published: 03/02/2020

(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution giving women the right to vote, Raritan Valley Community College will hold a Women’s Suffrage Film Series in March. Films to be screened include Suffragette, One Woman, One Vote, Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony, and Iron Jawed Angels.

Open to the public, the film series is being sponsored by the College’s Humanities, Social Science, Social Work and Education Department and the RVCC Women’s Center. All screenings, which are free of charge, will be held in the Campus Resource Center (College Center, Room 202), at the College’s Branchburg campus.

Suffragette (2015, Directed by Sarah Gavron), Tuesday, March 3 from 4:00pm-6:00pm - In early 20th-century London, a radical movement in support of women’s right to vote forever changes the lives of young women activists as they face violence in their fight for equality.

One Woman, One Vote (1995, Directed by Ruth Pollak), Tuesday, March 17 from 6:00pm-9:00pm - This documentary examines the American women’s suffrage movement, from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s famous Seneca Falls call to arms, to the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women voting rights.

Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony (1999, Directed by Ken Burns), Monday, March 23 from 4:00pm-6:00pm - This documentary recaptures the story of one of the most compelling political movements in American history. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, pioneers of the first wave of feminism, galvanize the fight for civil rights for women. Although they lead a charge for women’s rights that they do not live to see themselves, their struggle led to the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920.

It highlights women's suffrage leaders Alice Paul and Lucy Burns as they use peaceful and effective nonviolent strategies, tactics and dialogues to revolutionize the American feminist movement to grant women the right to vote.
