Lewis Center for the Arts presents "Machinal"

(PRINCETON, NJ) --  The Lewis Center for the Arts' Program in Theater at Princeton University will present Sophie Treadwell's 1928 expressionist drama Machinal on January 10, 11,12 and 13 at 8:00pm in the Wallace Theater at the Lewis Arts complex on the Princeton campus. The January 11 performance will be American Sign Language-interpreted.  Inspired by the real-life case of accused criminal Ruth Snyder, Machinal tells the story of Young Woman who works as a stenographer in an industrial, male-dominated world.

 



Passage Theatre's Solo Flights Series presents "To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter From Fred Hampton" and "Bicycle Face"

(TRENTON, NJ) -- Passage Theatre Company, Trenton's Barrymore Award-winning professional theatre company, will present two plays this February as part of their audience-favorite Solo Flights series. To My Unborn Child: A Love Letter from Fred Hampton, written and performed by Richard Bradford and directed by John Doyle, will perform from February 8-10. Bicycle Face, written and performed by Hannah Van Sciver and directed by David O'Connor, will perform from February 15-17.

 



Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Announces 2019 Season

(MADISON, NJ) -- The Shakespeare Theatre's 57th season promises to thrill audiences with productions filled with swashbucklers, star-crossed lovers, holiday magic, and wild and delightful comedy. Beginning in June and continuing through December, the 2019 season will include five productions on the 308-seat Main Stage at The F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in Madison, and one production at its Outdoor Stage, located on the campus of the College of Saint Elizabeth. The lineup includes The Three Musketeers (adapted by Ken Ludwig),  The Rainmaker, As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol, and, on the Outdoor Stage, William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play (abridged).

 



The Theater Project Receives Grant From Investors Foundation To Support Young Playwrights

(UNION, NJ) -- The Theater Project, presenting programs in Cranford, Maplewood, Union and Rahway, recently received a $500 grant from Investors Foundation.  The grant will help further Theater Project's mission of encouraging the next generation of writers by supporting its 17th annual Competition for Young Playwrights.

The Porchistas To Hold Farewell Bash For Drummer Jonathan Riordan

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- On Friday, January 11 at 8:30pm, The Porchistas are hosting a farewell show for their drummer Jonathan Riordan at The Porchistas Home Studio in Montclair. The night will include performances by The You and Eyes, The Good Kind, and The Porchistas. There will be a keg and snacks.  $5 suggested donation at the door.  Bring a reusable cup, mug, or jar.

 



Leonia Arts to Present 'Speakeasy' Benefit Jazz Concert Featuring Cenovia Cummins & Friends

(LEONIA, NJ) -- Travel back in time to the Roaring '20s at the Leonia Arts' 'Speakeasy', a live benefit jazz concert with the Cenovia Cummins & Friends band to support the organization's 2019 art initiatives.  Leonia Arts, a nonprofit cultural arts alliance in the borough of Leonia, New Jersey, presents the special event on Sunday, January 20 at 7:30pm at the American Legion Hall (American Legion Post #1), located at 399 Broad Avenue in the borough.

Garden State Film Festival Announces 2019 Educator of the Year Recipients

(ASBURY PARK, NJ) --  The Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) has chosen Linda Krebs and Erin Gomez, as the GSFF's 2019 Educator of the Year recipients. Both women are members and facilitators of the Monmouth County Shore Consortium for the Gifted & Talented (SCG&T), an organization dedicated to providing curriculum-driven enriching opportunities to smaller school districts. This honor is in recognition of their heartfelt devotion to their students and exceptional achievements in education, especially in film and video production as well as in the community. Linda and Erin will receive their awards at the black-tie-optional Awards Banquet at The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park on March 31st.

David Felicie Goes From the Air Force to Ballet "In One Leap" As Mowgli in Axelrod's "The Jungle Book"

(OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ) -- David Felicie of Jackson, NJ, will star in the role of Mowgli in the world premiere of the Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater's production of €œThe Jungle Book€ -- an exotic dance musical where east meets west, is an exciting retelling of Rudyard Kipling's collection of stories about a boy adopted and raised by wolves, who fulfills his quest for identity, love, and belonging.  Performances will take place February 2 and 9 at 8:00pm, February 3 at 3:00pm, and February 10 at 1:00pm and 5:00pm.

Marion Thompson Wright Lecture Series Presents "The Erotic as Power: Sexuality and the Black Experience"
(NEWARK, NJ) -- The erotic is often seen as a realm of oppression and danger. But, as Audre Lorde argued 40 years ago, it also contains the potential for empowerment and struggle. This tension will be explored as the 39th annual Marion Thompson Wright (MTW) Lecture Series brings together eminent scholars and performers to examine the poltical and social lives of the erotic in the African American experience.
West Windsor Arts Council presents Faculty Student Show
(PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ) -- Every day students of all ages come to the West Windsor Arts Center to expand their knowledge and experiment with art and creativity. Whether they are adults or children, they take classes in order to try something new or hone their skills by learning from some of the best teaching artists in the region. Classes are offered in many artistic media including painting, drawing, and sculpting as well as fashion design, photography and the literary and performing arts. The annual Faculty Student Show aims to provide the experience of submitting and preparing their work for a professional exhibition as well.

(WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ) -- The Center for the Arts at Monmouth University will host artist Sherrill Roland  on Tuesday, January 29 at 4:30pm in Wilson Hall Auditorium, to discuss his socially engaged artwork The Jumpsuit Project — that he uses to ignite conversations around issues related to mass incarceration.

Palette ArtSpace Presents "Cold Pop!" with Robert Piersanti and Faustine Badrichani
(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- Palette ArtSpace presents "Cold Pop!" by Robert Piersanti, now through January 27. The exhibit brings a touch of summer to a cold January with paintings of mermaids, surfers and more. Piersant's work features 1950s and 1960s pop culture with locals as subjects. He's shown work from the local area to Miami and Milan.  The exhibit also features new paintings of women by Faustine Badrichani, a French artist in New York who has shown at Palette previously. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.


Siblings' Interaction from "Different Sides of the Brain" Leads to Sotheby's Exhibit for Artists with Disabilities
Growing up in Watchung, NJ, it was clear that Brad and Dana Chernock’s interests and aptitudes gravitated toward “different sides of the brain”.  Brad was drawn toward medicine and science; His younger sister Dana’s passion was the arts. Through the years, Dana recalls, “Brad and I often shared articles and events with each other that combined science/technology with the arts.” But even they are surprised at where this collaborative approach has recently taken them.

Nick Kiefer In Iceland
Nick Kiefer is an award winning graphic designer and photographer based out of Asbury Park, NJ. He is currently the Art Director at Netwave Interactive - a branding and advertising agency in Point Pleasant. NJ. Nick has also been designing and photographing in the NJ music scene for more than half his life. He has designed dozens of record covers and gig posters for local musicians in the Asbury Park area. After a heavy year packed with work, he and his fiancé Kristina, decided to roam around Iceland for a few weeks back in October of 2018. Here are some photos from the trip.
Peter Max Remembers Frank Sinatra
(HOBOKEN, NJ) -- As fans of Frank Sinatra across the world remember the legendary entertainer on what would have been his 103th birthday (December 12th), pop artist Peter Max provides a series of portraits of 'Ol' Blue Eyes' at different points throughout his career. Max, with a 5 decades-long career of his own, created these signature, vibrantly colored portraits, working with the Sinatra family to celebrate the Sinatra Centennial in 2015. They remain a fan favorite at gallery shows across the country.
