(NEWARK, NJ) -- Prudential Center and the New Jersey Devils have announced United Airlines as the presenting partner of their “Give 82” service program, where the organizations surprised students at Newark’s Philips Academy with a brand new, state-of-the-art outdoor hockey rink. With community outreach being one of the organizations core values, the “Give 82” program encourages Prudential Center and New Jersey Devils employees to commit 82 hours of service to make a difference throughout the Garden State communities. Prudential Center is committed to serving others through a wide array or community based activities such as feeding the homeless at St. John’s Soup Kitchen or Goodwill Rescue Mission, visiting local Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA’s and schools or packaging nonperishable goods during the holidays for underserved individuals and families.
“Our partnership with United Airlines allows us to further our charitable efforts while growing the game of hockey throughout our underserved communities,” said Jeff Scott, Vice President of Community Investments & Grassroots for the New Jersey Devils. “We are looking forward to our future projects together, creating lasting memories and making a difference in the lives of many.”
United Airlines has strong ties with the city of Newark as their northeast hub is Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which offers flights to more than 150 destinations in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In Newark and greater New Jersey areas, United is a proud partner of other leading cultural institutions including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Museum and Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District through financial and travel contributions to continue building on this mission.
“Being a proud partner of Prudential Center and the New Jersey Devils is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for United Airlines as these organizations align to our commitment of supporting our local community and our core values as a company,” said Jill Kaplan, president, New York/New Jersey for United Airlines. “It is our mission to connect people and unite the world, and this partnership enacts that motto into action.”
The outdoor hockey rink further exemplifies the NHL’s commitment of bringing hockey to underserved communities, along with giving children a safe place to play hockey in the city of Newark. United Airlines played an active role in building the outdoor hockey rink where their logo is featured on the blue line of the rink.
“As everyone knows, outdoor space is scarce in Newark so we are truly thankful to the New Jersey Devils, Prudential Center, and United Airlines for the renovation to our outdoor play area. This gift will impact not only the students of Philip’s Academy, but the entire community that surrounds it,” said Miguel Brito, CEO of Philip’s Academy. “The Devils and Prudential Center have been outstanding supporters of Philip’s Academy over the past 18 months and this recent act of generosity is “icing” on the cake!”

Philip’s Academy provides a moral and rigorous education to a diverse student body, accomplished in a hands-on, technology infused educational environment that embraces differentiated instruction and individual attention that will allow our students to attend college, while developing a commitment to global citizenship, environmental sustainability, and personal virtue. After serving students for more than 25 years, St. Philip’s Academy made history in 2013 when it became the first independent school in New Jersey to convert to a Charter School under a new state law. Converting from St. Philip’s Academy to Philip’s Academy Charter School enables our organization to extend its successful educational model to more students. Our challenge is to continually “raise the bar” to provide our students with the best educational experience. Leadership qualities and a sense of community responsibility are developed in small classes and taught by caring and innovative teachers. To learn more, visit www.pacsnewark.org.
