New Jersey Hall of Fame: Class of 2017 ENTERPRISE

The members of the New Jersey Hall of Fame Class of 2017 were inducted on Sunday, May 6th in Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre.  The following is a look at the members inducted in the ENTERPRISE category: John Hanson, Steve Forbes, Joe Buckelew, and Buddy Valastro - "Cake Boss".

John Hanson - Founder of The Hampshire Companies, Hanson has more than 54 years of experience in the real estate industry.  He has served as chairman or director of several major corporations and groups, including Yankee Global Enterprises and the Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network LLC (YES Network).  He served as a Director of Hackensack University Medical Center for over 18 years and serves as Chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Inc.  A Bergen County native, he grew up in Bogota.  His real estate acumen comes from his father, James E. Hanon, credited with developing the country’s first suburban industrial park, located in Teterboro.

Steve Forbes - A business leader and chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, Steve also founded Empower America and is a Freedom Works board member.  Born Malcom Stevenson Forbes Jr. in Morristown, New Jersey, Steve Forbes grew up immersed in the worlds of publishing and politics.  His grandfather, B.C. Forbes, was a journalist who founded Forbes Magazine.  His father, Malcom Forbes, served as a state senator and had two unsuccessful bids for the New Jersey governorship in 1953 and 1957.  Forbes has penned several books, including Why Free Markets Are Moral and Big Government Isn’t and How Capitalism Will Save Us. Steve Forbes was a Republican candidate in the 1996 and 2000 presidential primaries.

Joe Buckelew - Chairman of Conner Strong & Buckelew, which serves the insurance, risk management, and employee benefits brokerage and consulting needs of clients throughout the United States and abroad.  He has served as Vice Chairman of Kimball Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees since 1985 and on the Barnabas Health Care System’s Board of Trustees for more than 10 years.  He also served as Chairman of the New Jersey Highway Authority for seven years and Chairman & Vice Chairman of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority.  He is currently on the Board  of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission.  Buckelew is a lifelong resident of Lakewood.  He and his wife, Carol, have been married for over 60 years.

Buddy Valastro - “Cake Boss” - A master baker, Valastro is the head baker of family owned Carlo’s Bake Shop, featured on TLC’s hit show Cake Boss.  In addition to the Hoboken location, Carlo’s has open more than 20 bakeries due to the popularity of the show.  Because of the Valastro family’s dedication to quality and excellence, Carlo’s has received national recognition.  Master Baker Bartolo Jr. “Buddy” has been featured in numerous publications including Modern Bride and The Knot.  Buddy’s cake design was voted by the Today Show viewers as the best cake in America.  Valastro began working at his family’s business at age 11, alongside his father, mother, and four sisters. Buddy has also opened an event planning & catering company and 3 restaurants.

State Theatre New Jersey presents An Evening with Bob Woodward
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey presents An Evening With Bob Woodward - The State of the American Presidency on Monday, December 10 at 8:00pm. Moderated by Governor Christine Todd Whitman, Woodward provides a behind the scene look into his 47 year career from Watergate to his latest book, as well as the current state of politics. Tickets range from $35-$85.
CivicStory To Present "News and Democracy" Forum In Summit On November 19th
(SUMMIT, NJ) --  Four multimedia news leaders will debate the civic purposes of journalism in a free public forum on Monday, November 19 at 7:30 pm, in Summit.  Entitled "News and Democracy," the forum is presented by CivicStory, an online solutions-based news site focused on sustainability and creative change. Panelists include NJTV correspondent Michael Hill; Joseph Lichterman, senior business associate at the Lenfest Institute for Journalism in Philadelphia; Stefanie Murray, Director of the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University; and Paula Saha, Director of Communications for the NJ State Bar Association.
RVCC Planetarium to Present Holiday Shows, Star Shows, Laser Concerts in December
​​​​​​​(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- The Raritan Valley Community College Planetarium in Branchburg is offering a variety of star shows and laser concerts for the entire family in December, including holiday programs to help make the season especially merry and bright. In addition, a special Winter Solstice Saturday program will feature free, hands-on activities for all ages.
East Brunswick Historical Society to Host Talk on Central Jersey's Crime of the Century
(EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The East Brunswick Historical Society will host a program on Sunday, November 18 at 2:00pm about the famous Hall-Mills Murder Case.  It goes back to a September evening in 1922 when the bodies of 2 lovers were discovered on an abandoned farm at the outskirts of New Brunswick. They were Reverend Edward Wheeler Hall, 41, and Eleanor Mills, 34.
Neil deGrasse Tyson Returns To Asbury Park
(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- Asbury Park Convention Hall presents famed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson on Thursday, December 6 at 8:00pm. Tyson is the host of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey on FOX, and NOVA ScienceNOW and Origins on PBS.  He returns to Asbury Park with a fun, family-friendly evening designed to help unravel the mysteries of modern science. Tickets range from $47 to $223.


A Look at Newark Centric City
(NEWARK, NJ) -- Newark Centric City officially launched on September 29, 2018, but site owner Suzanne Joblonski has been actively promoting Newark through social media for the past year and a half.  New Jersey Stage spoke with her to learn more about the site.

Now that summer is officially in the rearview mirror – even with an occasional warm-weather day – the time has come for thoughts to turn to things autumnal. “First some comments about New Jersey,” said Whoopi Goldberg, the surprise host of the 10th Annual New Jersey Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  “I live here.  It’s a wonderful state and what most people don’t know is that the amount of brain power that comes out of New Jersey is extraordinary!  The musicians and their prowess is amazing! When you look at the amount of folks who are here - this is your city; this is your state; these are your people.  Maybe you will be up here at some point.”
