ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...6/23/16

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 06/23/2016

Randy Bachman is a songwriter who has penned some of the most well known hits since the '60s, yet he tends to soar under the mainstream radar. One of the founders of The Guess Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive, Bachman has written classics such as "Taking Care of Business," "Let It Ride,"American Woman," "These Eyes" and many more and has influenced generations of guitarists, songwriters and musician friends along the way.

Now Bachman is bringing his talents to New York City for a two night engagement at BB King's Blues Club as he presents: "Every Song Tells A Story." "This is a storytelling type of show, similar to my DVD,"Every Song Tells A Story," he explained. "Except I'll be doing some of my songs from "Heavy Blues" and some other things; it will be a fun."

Fully stacked with a great lineup of musicians behind him; Bachman is excited to play the gigs at BB King's; even though the excitement was tempered somewhat with the unfortunate cancellation of a special event which was planned for Wednesday 6/22 in conjunction with "Vintage Guitar Magazine." "We had a contest, "Rock Out With Randy," we chose the winner and he was fabulous. I listened to every entry personally and when I do that I shut my monitor off and use the sound only because I don't want the visuals to sway my decision in any way. This guy was just everything I could've hoped for; he played the solo so well. We were supposed to announce the winner and fly him into New York on Wednesday evening June 22 but then that's when the complications began. This guy, Brock Davisson, is handicapped and in a wheelchair and he's never flown or travelled to New York City before. He and his family were afraid that the logistics would be too much as far as him getting around and with the anxiety of never travelling to New York; so we decided to cancel the event and hold it closer to his home out near Pittsburgh, PA. He is truly an amazing player and I'm glad that we could accommodate his needs; I'm looking forward to meeting him and performing with him at the show out there."

Bachman says that his schedule and projects have caused him to have "Never left" or deviate from the business he loves. Along with the remaining dates on this tour, he has plenty of other things on his docket. "I've got many projects," he stated with excitement in his voice. "Some are long term, some are overnight. The DVD just went double platinum, I'm still supporting the "Heavy Blues" album as well as in the process of getting that out on vinyl and I'm working on a movie. I am also in the process of putting together a different type of blues album slated for 2017 and I've already got Walter Trout and Sonny Landreth interested as well as some other really cool guests. I'm thinking about doing it in front of a small audience to capture it live. I'm also in touch with Burton Cummings; we've been asked to do something for Canada's 150th birthday celebration; so I'm busy for the foreseeable future."

BB King's Blues Club is located at 247 West 42nd. Street in New York City and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $65 the day of show and a VIP Package is available in four packs only at a cost of $100 per ticket and there is a $10 minimum per person.
