SOPAC Presents Peter Yarrow LIVE in Concert This Friday

(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ ) — This Friday, February 26, at 8:00pm, the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) will present Peter Yarrow of the legendary 1960s folk music trio, Peter Paul and Mary. The performance is at 8pm. Tickets range from $35 to $45.

As many will recall, Peter Paul and Mary’s 60s-era folk music was the soundtrack to an era: The March on Washington, the American Civil Rights movement, the women’s movement, and the plight of migrant farmers.

More recently, however, Yarrow’s music has helped to occupy Wall Street, been featured to highlight nuclear risks, and used to bring about awareness of climate change, thus illustrating that folk music can still have just as powerful an effect as it did in the 1960s when people raise their voices together in song.

States Yarrow, with folk music, “we can take that sense of togetherness and turn it into ‘something else.’”

Not only is Yarrow well-known for writing such timeless folk standards as “Light One Candle,” “The Great Mandala,” “Weave Me the Sunshine,” and more — songs which, for some, have become so throughly ingrained in their consciousness that they sometimes seem they weren’t actually ever “written” at all — but he is also world-renowned for writing the timeless children’s classic, “Puff the Magic Dragon,” a song he still performs live in concert and invites children of all ages in the audience to join him in singing it on stage.

Other Yarrow live-performance staples frequently include “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowing in the Wind,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” “The Wedding Song (There is Love),” “This Land is Your Land,” and more.

On the bill with Yarrow at SOPAC will be the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 1990s folk music scene, John Gorka.
