New Jersey Festival Orchestra Presents Two Performances Of La Traviata

originally published: 01/24/2017

(MADISON, NJ) -- Prepare to have your heart touched, troubled, and transformed in a way that only great opera can do and join us on Saturday March 4th at 7:00pm at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield and March 5th at Drew University in Madison, when the New Jersey Festival Orchestra offers a full presentation of Verdi’s La Traviata, sung in Italian with supertitles, acted and in costume.

Verdi’s most timeless and lyrical score, La Traviata has continued to captivate audiences for more than 150 years.  In the glitzy world of Paris, a naive young man falls head over heels for a glamorous society party girl. Together they trade the fast life for an idyllic love nest in the country…until bourgeois society values tragically tear them apart and force them to give up their dreams.

This powerful romantic drama, illuminated through Verdi’s soaring arias and passionate duets, is surely one of the most popular operas of all time. A cast of internationally acclaimed guest performers assembled from Maestro Wroe’s extensive contacts in European and American opera houses, joins us to present this magnum opus that is sure to melt even the coldest heart.

Metropolitan Opera’s soprano Jessica Sandidge makes her NJFO debut as Violetta, the fallen woman who sacrifices her last chance for love. Tenor Cody Austin (one of our December Holiday tenors) returns to NJFO to co-star as Alfredo Germont, a young man from a good family who is willing to risk everything for Violetta. Another Metropolitan Opera star, Louis Otey, sings Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s father, who disapproves of Violetta’s lifestyle, but is moved by her plight. David Wroe conducts and stage director Maria Todaro updates this emotional, timeless tale of hypocrisy and sacrifice to modern day with sophisticated and colorful staging.

Can’t speak Italian? Neither can we! That’s why we are presenting La Traviata with supertitles to be sure that every word of the performance is understood. The translated lyrics or dialogue are projected above the stage in English to make it easy to follow all the action and drama of the opera.
