Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...8/7/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 08/07/2025

"That is still the latest album and I'm on the road quite a bit; fortunately, I'm young and strong and at the same time old and wise," laughed the ageless Tom Rush as he readies to once again take the stage at The Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA on August 15 for an 8 p.m. show. "Matt Nakoa will be with me, he's getting busier with stuff of his own, which is totally appropriate; this guy should be playing stadiums."

With a career that has spanned seven decades and helped spawn the careers of many, Tom Rush has been what many have considered a "Mainstay" of the Folk music genre. Rush's voice and style have been described as "Rich" and "Warm" but it is his stage presence and storytelling that has set him apart from others from the 1960s, right up to this day.

"I've come to realize this is my sixty-fifth annual farewell tour and at some point, I'm gonna have to announce a "And this time I mean it farewell tour," he continued with another laugh. "I love playing for people, basically I get paid to have fun and that's hard to beat. I think if it gets to the point where I can't do a good job, I think then I would want to get off the stage because doing a bad job is not any fun at all but so far so good, I'm still having a lot of fun."

When Rush comes to Sellersville, he'll be doing so with years of recordings under his belt but it's his latest release, 2024's "Gardens Old, Flowers New" whose popularity he's still riding that will be in focus with an eye to his past as well but he also enjoys aiding up and coming talent as he has done for years through a series he began thanks to the pandemic.

"Gardens Old, Flowers New," the official release date was April 1 of last year and the title is a line that's in two of the songs; I was watching my baby girl, who is now 26, playing in the garden and the line, "This garden is old but the flowers new," meaning, watching your child grow up is something that has happened for hundreds of thousands of years but every time it's different, the garden is old but the flowers are new each time and Matt Nakoa, my producer on this album decided that I was the old garden and the songs were the new flowers and I said, "OK, alright." "Voices" was the previous album and I also wrote all of the songs on that one. There were two traditional songs on that one because I didn't want to give up my folk singer credentials (laughs) and the one before that was called "What I Know" and that was my usual mix of my own songs and other peoples'. I've also been doing my series online called "Rockport Sundays" and I think we've talked about it before but for four years now, there is me and a guest chatting for a bit and swapping a song and they are like 15 minute episodes. I just decided to do a sub-series about my albums and do an episode for each album. I've got a turntable, the camera zooms in on the turntable and then I play the same song for the cameras and it has been a lot of fun. I think there are 16 albums, there are a couple of iffy things in there. There was one CD that was never released on any other format; it was basically a demo that I made with my guitar player Trevor Veitch and it was a demo to go out fishing for a record contract and to fund the demo, we released it on CD and the CD sales paid for a bunch of things. I had a roommate in Cambridge who kept telling me that I had to hear this guy, James Taylor and I kept telling him, "Pick up your room please" and I ignored him. Finally, when I was with Elektra, my producer Paul Rothchild brought James in and I remember, we sat on the floor in an empty office, no furniture with a tape recorder and James recorded six songs for me and then he went off to England and got discovered by The Beatles label but before that happened, he was included on "The Circle Game" album. Things have kind of come full-circle because this "Rockport Sundays" series that I've been doing on Patreon has been introducing a lot of young talent to a wider audience. My guests have sometimes been my contemporaries, Tom Paxton, Jonathan Edwards and so forth but a lot of my guests have been youngsters that I've never heard of who have been introduced to me through various means and they're great! I've been trying to introduce them to a wider audience and give them a leg up because today, it's really hard these days to get started."

"The other side of that coin is that it's extremely hard to make a living on downloads," he continued. "A thousand downloads on Spotify; what do you think that should be worth to the songwriter? It's something like maybe 20 cents and so it's very difficult for somebody just starting out to make a living. So, anything I can do to help people get a leg up; I've always made my living on stage. I've always regarded my recordings as promotional material for my stage shows."

When one has been active since the '60s, there has been plenty of opportunity to garner an audience but as times have changed; has his audience?

"The Boomers are a good chunk of my audience but there is quite a bit of diversity. A few weeks ago, I had a man and his wife with their 10 year old kid come up to me at the vending table after the show and I said, "So, your parents dragged you to the show" and the parents said, "No, he dragged us" and I like that, I like that a lot. So, there is quite an age mix and I think Matt probably does bring in some younger people but also, if you go to a Matt Nokoa show, a lot of the audience has white hair (Laughs). Again, I've been helping him establish an audience which of course will come back to bite me because he will be playing stadiums and then I'm hoping he'll have me on as the opening act. He plays keyboard, guitar, slide trombone and, and, and; I hate him, he's just too talented (Laughs). He didn't play guitar at all when he first started working with me and he is left handed and I remember we had a discussion and he said, " Should I get a left handed guitar or should I play it right handed?" I remember, we were playing a show in Richmond, Virginia and there was a music store next door and we went in and there was a slide trombone hanging on the wall and Matt got all excited and said, "That's the same trombone I played in high school and I had gotten really good." So, he went over to the guy at the counter  and asked, "How much?" He said, "No, no, never mind" and then it turns out, the woman who owned the venue we were playing at used to own the music store and she said she could get it at half-price; so, I got it for him for Christmas."

Rush's experience and knowledge have served him well as has his talent over the aforementioned seven decades and he truly shows no signs of slowing down. So, what can we expect from him and Nakoa on August 15 in Sellersville?

"Well, it depends on what the venue wants because I'm basically the hired help. Usually we do two sets with an intermission and they are usually 45 to 50 minutes each and Matt will be doing a few of his own during the course of the evening. He steals the show, I pay him to do it, I don't know what's wrong with me (Laughs). I'll start the show, Matt will come out and join me for four or five songs and then he will do a couple on his own and then I'll come back and do a couple more solo tunes and then he'll join me for the last song; I'm kind of reacting to the audience. There is no real set plan for the songs, I think it's better for him and the audience if we do it that way. I'm also doing a bunch of solo shows as well, partly because Matt has gotten so busy doing his own thing. There is a fellow named Seth Glier who is as talented as Matt, totally different from Matt butt he accompanied me to Chicago and Wisconsin recently but what I was getting at was, doing a two-hour show by myself; having Matt or Seth to give me a break for a few minutes so I can go and sit down is a treat. I did a solo show recently where they wanted me to do 90 minutes straight through with no intermission and when it came time to walk off the stage, I was having trouble walking because I had been standing in one place for 90 minutes (Laughs)."
