Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...7/17/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 07/17/2025

"I did two years of touring with "Days Of Future Past: My Sojourn" and it was great fun, I really, really enjoyed it and Jon Davison of YES joined me; long story but he joined me and he's actually my son-in-law now because he married my daughter," laughed legendary Moody Blues bassist John Lodge as he prepares for a string of shows here in The Garden State and beyond. "Jon is here with me now, we've been rehearsing for the next tour so yeah, it's great! He's a wonderful guy and a fantastic musician."

Lodge kicks off his "Singer in a Rock and Roll Band Tour" on Saturday July 19 with a show at The Vogel in Red Bank followed by shows at The Newton Theatre on July 20 and The Scottish Rite Auditorium on July 23 with a bonus area show at Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem, PA on July 24.

This run of shows covers a span of approximately three weeks and wraps up on August 7 in Des Plaines, IL with very little downtime between dates; not bad for a veteran musician such as Lodge who in 2023, received an unwelcome Christmas gift.

"Yeah, Christmas Eve 2023, great Christmas present I must say," he laughed as he spoke of a stroke he suffered on that date. "Yeah, it put me into a strange place to be honest, I never thought of anything like that. It's a two year recovery program, I've got a few people working with me and beating me up but it's well worth it, I feel good and I'm really up for my next tour."

That "Next tour" is here and according to John, logistics and a genuine love for his New Jersey audiences lent into the decision to start here.

"My agent and my daughter Emily who manages me, she works really well with my agent and they discuss where it would be great to rehearse, rehearsal studios in the vicinity; many factors come into it. I'm flying in from England and my band is basically all American and they're flying in from all parts of the States. So, New Jersey works well, it's fantastic. We're doing the Northeast this trip, in the winter we'll concentrate more on Florida and the warmer weather and the west. I like New Jersey, it has always been fantastic to The Moody Blues and me and I've made a lot of friends there and met a lot of fans; it's really fantastic. I've decided that I want to keep the music of The Moody Blues alive and I thought, I'm just gonna do a "Singer in a Rock and Roll Tour" (Laughs). I've had two years with "Days of Future Past" and it has been a fantastic time but there are some other Moody Blues songs I want to do, some deep cuts, songs I haven't done before, some songs I'm going to re-introduce so, I'm really excited about this tour."

Yes, his "Days of Future Past" tour was a return to his Moody Blues roots, in part because he felt the need to breathe new life into one of the biggest albums of all time but also in an attempt to expose the music of The Moody Blues to new and younger audiences; much like his fellow Englishmen did with Blues music in the 1960s and '70s.

"One of the reasons for rekindling "Days of Future Past" was for the people who have been with us or me from the beginning; it was fantastic that they could relive the songs again but also, I was hoping the new listeners who are buying vinyl now might buy my album and say, oh, I'm gonna listen to all of The Moody Blues songs and go back through the history of the Moodys. I think there is a great history of Moody Blues music that you don't really hear now; not just Moody Blues but other outfits like The Moody Blues, the music has disappeared from the airwaves and I think the world needs some peace, love and good live music. In England Blues wasn't played on English radio at all, it was the English musicians that found all of their songs and started playing them and then you started to find Sonny Boy Williamson and John Lee Hooker and they came via English musicians and not the usual path through generations of Blues. So, that's right, we discovered it and hopefully the young people today will discover The Moody Blues."

The "Singer in a Rock and Roll Band Tour"  will once again be very heavy on Moody Blues material as he continues to reward past fans while hoping to gain new ones but Lodge isn't done making solo records quite yet either and his current band features a new player or two and his aforementioned new son-in-law lends a hand vocally as well.

"Two hours with a break, sometimes I'll look at the setlist and think, I'd love to do this song as well and my daughter will say, "Daddy, the set is two hours already," he said with another laugh. "I've been working with a guitarist named Dave Colquhoun who I did some concerts for Ukraine with a couple of years ago and we were joined on stage by a couple of guys from Procol Harum and I've been working with him in the studio as well and my new record, "Whispering Angels," Dave plays all across that, he's a beautiful guitarist. He was with Rick Wakeman originally and that's where I met him when he was doing a concert with Rick and we played golf together and we did "The Golemite" and Dave was the guitarist on "The Golemite" and all things seemed to work together. So, Dave joins me on guitar, Jason Charboneau on cello, Billy Ashbaugh on drums and of course, Alan Hughes my music director, is on keyboards."
