Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/2/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 10/02/2025

"I'm in Stockholm, I'll be stateside in a couple of weeks, I've been here pretty much since the beginning of the year. I don't own a place anywhere, I'm pretty much a straight up nomad these days. I did a couple of European tours earlier in the year, I've done a little bit of holidaying over here and I've just kind of been hanging out until my European visitor visa has run out. So, now it's time to go back to the States and do some touring over there."

Joshua Radin has experienced much in his nomadic life, a life that, much like his music, is ever changing and his latest two for one release, "One Day Home" has him fresh off extensive European and U.K. tours and he's getting ready to launch an approximate 35 show run here in the U.S.

"One Day Home" was released earlier this year and on August 22 he released a second "Vulnerable" version of the same record and both will be on display when he launches his tour on October 8 in Nashville followed by stops in the tri-state area on October 16 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center, October 17 at The Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA and October 18 at Sony Hall in New York City.

"Yeah, I'll be out for two months around the U.S. starting in October," he began. "There will be a little New Jersey action and then in New York City at Sony Hall. "One Day Home" has 13 songs that I wrote and on August 22, I released a second version of the album but with only piano and vocals; I thought it might be cool for listeners to hear an alternate version of each of the songs. You never know, when I write a song, the hardest thing in the world is going into the studio and saying, OK, leading into one kind of production on a song because in my head, I'm always thinking, well this can go this way, this can go this way. I probably could've done five versions of each song in a different way but I figured I'd choose two (Laughs)."

With so much going on inside of his head when it comes to writing his material; how does he go about it?

"I always write on guitar and I always start with sitting around on the couch with acoustic guitar and coming up with chord progressions I like and melodies and then I pretty much come up with melodies with phonemes, sort of gibberish, I guess it helps free my mind melodically and then i've got melodies that are running around my head for a long time and until I put words to them, they don't get out of my head; it's almost like of function of staying sane for me."

Radin does a lot of solo acoustic work with the occasional duo or trio combination when he tours; with the release of this album, he has decided to use a full band. When asked, given the nature of the releases being with and without a band, how he planned on incorporating both aspects, he replied instantly.

""One Day Home" came out with a full band in February, the piano and vocal (Version) came out on August 22 and when I wrote the 13 songs and went into the studio, I knew I wanted a full band, I wanted it purely acoustic, more guitar driven with piano, keys, drums and bass and then I figured there was a more intimate version when you just do piano and vocals solo of each song. I knew that I wanted to do that going into the studio but I wanted to take about six months to release the second version so people could digest the first version of the album. When I play concerts, I don't necessarily stick to any way that I've recorded the song before. They can change throughout the tour, throughout the years, there are sometimes a piano song from five or six years ago that I'll decide before a show that I'm just gonna play this solo on an acoustic guitar. It's one of those things, how do I say it? Throughout the history of artists and bands putting out music; record it and so many artists and bands go out and try and replicate the studio versions of the songs and I've just never made that a priority for me. I see them as two different entities, playing live and playing in the studio. Every now and then I'll play a song in the same way as I recorded it but I like to mix it up, that way it keeps it fresh and inspiring for me and the players in the band that you have in the studio or that you're touring with; actually, this year is the first time I'm touring with a full band in about six or seven years. I've been doing a lot of acoustic shows either solo, duo or trio. So, this is the first time I'll be having a full rhythm section with me on tour in six or seven years. So, there are gonna be some songs where I recorded maybe a solo acoustic song on the guitar and I'll get in the studio rehearsing for the tour with the band and maybe I'll hear something and I'll say to the drummer, "I think it'd be cool if we added some percussion behind this" and we just figure it out and like I said before, every time I write a song, my brain is always swimming with how many different possibilities there are in terms of production, tempo and all that sort of things. So, there are just so many ways; I never like to get locked into one way of playing a song. I get if you're a band like The Rolling Stones, one of the biggest bands of all time, if I went to see The Stones and they played a bunch of my favorite hits but it was just Keith on guitar and Mick singinging and no drums or no bass, I think it'd be cool for a song or two and I'd like to see that kind of show in an intimate space but I'm going to see The Stones thinking, I want to hear them the way I know the songs with their big hits and their rock and roll. So, with my kind of music, I feel it's very lyrically driven, it's not a party, you're not dancing around listening to my music, it's very calm and intimate; in that way there are a lot of ways that I can explore the stage and different instruments and how I want to get the message of each song across to each different audience, if that makes sense. I've been doing this for like 20 years now and I guess I've developed an innate sense for what my audience wants and what I'm able to get away with when I'm exploring a certain song and how many different ways there are to play it; I get a sense of what they want and so it always ends up a bit of a compromise. Sometimes I might think a song might sound better this way but I know that the fans are coming and they want to hear an acoustic song in at least a particular kind of way and if I added drums some of them might be like, I don't know about that. There is no hard and fast rule, take the song as it comes, see how I"m feeling that day at soundcheck. Sometimes I might turn to the band and say, you know what? I know there's no bass on this song on the recording but let's have the bass come in on the second half of the song just to give it a little lift; not huge changes but little changes that a discerning ear would notice but more importantly for me, it keeps me inspired to keep playing these songs that I've been playing forever because it can get a little tiring playing them all the exact same way year after year."

Speaking of his band; Radin says that he had to go in a bit of a different direction assembling some new players, one he has total confidence in.

"My old band, they now all have wives and kids and they don't want to tour as much so I had to look for younger players who want to be road dogs," he said with a laugh. "The band in Europe, I brought out a friend of mine, a lovely girl I met, her name is Ellen Krauss and I fell in love with one of her songs when I met her and we had talked for a couple of years about me bringing her out on the road; she's from Sweden but she had never played outside of Sweden before. So, I really wanted to introduce her to my fans all over Europe and the U.K. and so she had been touring with her Swedish band and I said, "Why don't you all jump on my bus and I'll use your band in my headlining set" and so I use those guys for all of the European and U.K. tours that I've been doing this year. When I go back to the States, my lead guitar player Gabe Burdulis, who lives in Nashville, he actually put together a band of a bunch of guys from Nashville that he loves; I haven't even met these guys yet, I'm gonna meet them at rehearsal before the first show in Nashville at 3rd and Lindsley. I always kick-off my tours in Nashville because that's where the tour bus companies are. So, you always rent the tour bus for the tour and we usually start off there."

So, when that tour bus comes rolling into town, will there be any twists, turns or surprises, especially given his "Spontaneous" nature?

"I wouldn't say there are any twists, turns or surprises except that anyone who has come to see me in the States for the past six or seven years hasn't seen me with a full band. So, I think it just adds a completely different element when you add percussion and a rhythm section. I don't do setlists, I try to keep it spontaneous so the band will learn like 40 or 50 of my songs and we'll go through them at rehearsal before the tour and I'll get a feel as we're playing them for what sounds the best, what's most inspiring for me to play and hen I'll just kind of read the room so every show should be a little bit different."
