Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 05/07/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 05/07/2026

Terry Barber is an "Internationally acclaimed" vocalist who has graced stages such as The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, The kennedy Center and more and his recent project called "Mercury" will now grace the stage of The Brook Arts Center, otherwise known as "The Brook,"  in Bound Brook, NJ on May 15 at 8 p.m. for a one night only engagement.

"Mercury" is not a Queen tribute show, it is Barber doing his reimagined interpretations of some of Queen's best known material with an emphasis on Freddie Mercury

So, how does someone who is classically trained in various vocal styles far removed from rock music wind up singing one of the greatest rock voices of all time?

"Well, I started out singing in Kindergarten," he began. "My Kindergarten teacher was my favorite teacher. She had a piano in the classroom and she would begin and end the day with music. She would play the piano and she would often ask me to sing for the class because in Kindergarten, a lot of kids haven't learned the skill of matching pitch yet. I was already enjoying singing quite a bit but the following year, my mother, who was involved in theater and musical theater mostly as a hobby but also kind of as a side gig; she was taking voice lessons and she asked me if I'd like to take voice lessons. There was one great voice teacher in our area in Hanover, New Hampshire and she said, "I don't take kids at all" and my mother said, "Will you just listen to him?" That was that and I was her student and it was wonderful. There was a new opera company that started when I was nine in our area who just happened to be doing an opera that starred a boy soprano and they didn't even know I existed and I showed up at the audition and stole the role away from some girl who they were going to have play a boy so, by the time I was nine or ten, I was empowered by my love of music and my ability to sing."

"I started out at Northwestern University as a double degree in engineering and music and decided that engineering would be my hobby and I didn't complete my engineering degree, I decided to pursue music. I went to England to do my masters where I was able to get many of the original scores of composers like Bach and Handel in my hands in the British Music Library which was amazing and then I was offered a chance to get into Chanticleer which I thought would be my career. After one year, I started to notice due to the sound of the group and what the group needed out of the singers, I was gonna have to make a choice between being a soloist and staying in the group. The group was an incredible experience; we sang in places like The Kennedy Center and I will always be thankful for the 116 concerts in the years I spent with them."

"I was in Florida and an older entertainment entrepreneur I'll call him named Jack Starr who was one of the first DJs to play Elvis on the radio," he continued, "He pitched to me that he and I would work together on a concert that was like a Broadway review focusing on the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and at first I said no, I didn't want to do it but he was right. So, he and I worked together on a few tours and then it was his idea, because of my vocal range, that I should consider singing the music of Freddie Mercury. I had grown up listening; who doesn't know all the hits of Queen? I mean, it's the best selling music of all time. So, if you don't know it, you must've been hiding under a rock somewhere (Laughs). So, I decided in my kind of music nerd way that I'd read five biographies about Freddie Mercury and go to interviews; there are a lot of Queen cover bands out there and even though I'm not impersonating Freddy Mercury, I want the audiences to leave the theater with a deeper understanding of who he was as a person; his triumphs, challenges, why'd they write that song? Interesting, funny things, I pull up quotes, talk about the biggest performance of all time, one point nine billion viewers watched Live Aid and it was a huge deal for Queen and I actually share Freddie's words so they understand who he was."

Barber's range and ability are borderline unparalleled, what can we expect at The Brook?

"Brookarts.org is where you can get tickets and you can expect a party. Freddy really cared about the audience having a good time. There was a time when people were writing a lot of controversial music to try and have an impact politically or whatever, he really didn't do that. He wanted people to be relieved from their stress in a fun atmosphere so they could get away from the problems in their life and just be entertained and that's the vibe we go after as well."
