Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 04/02/2026

"Yeah, we are looking forward to it," said guitarist Johnny A of The Johnny A Trio just prior to their recent New York City Iridium appearance.

Born and bred in New England, Johnny's journey and music have taken him all over the world, allowing him to rub elbows and perform with some of the most well-known names in rock, jazz and blues history. His Johnny A Trio's stage shows have been described as, " A beacon of authenticity, artistry, and soul" in a recent press release.

Johnny took the time before their March 22 Iridium show to talk about his career, his music, charitable work and more.

"I originally hail from Boston, Massachusetts and I've been playing guitar for most of my child to adult life, pretty much all of it," he started. "I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of great artists as a side man. Originally I worked with Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater back in the mid-seventies late seventies and then I was the musical director for Bobby Whitlock who was the keyboard player for Derek and the Dominos, Delaney & Bonnie; he also did George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album. Later on I went to be the musical director for Peter Wolf of The J. Geils Band for about eight or nine years, I co-produced one of his albums on Warner Brothers. Previous to all of that stuff, I had my own bands in Boston; after the Wolf thing, i ended up doing my first debut internationally released record, "Sometime Tuesday Morning" which came out in the year 2000. I put out another album in 2004 on Steve Vai's label which was nominated for a Grammy. I did a live DVD/CD in 2010 and my latest two things are, I released my third studio album, "Driven" in 2014 and I re-released a single last year digitally on all the digital formats. I was also the touring lead guitarist with a band called The Yardbirds out of London for almost four years; I'm back to doing my trio again. I was touring solo for quite some time doing a looping show that was very well received and I worked for about five or six years doing it but I wanted to get back to playing in a small ensemble. in something that was more free and more improvised. So, I've been working with my trio now for quite some time."

Peter Wolf and The J. Geils Band have been revered in the Boston area and as is known as fact worldwide but he/they are held in wide regard in New England. How did Johnny meet Wolf? Well, let's just say, musicians meet musicians.

"The first time I met Peter Wolf, we met from being musicians; my buddy Jeff Golub who later went on to play with Rod Stewart, Billy Squire and had a brilliant smooth jazz solo career may he rest in peace; he passed away a few years ago now but he had brought Wolf down to see me play because when they were doing the "Come as You Are" or the "Lights Out" tour, they wanted another guitar player so Wolf came and checked me out. The second time I actually met him and really worked with him, I was called in to do a Christmas single for the local radio station WBCN and it was a track that featured Wolf as the vocalist and I was hired to play acoustic slide guitar on that track. Then later on, I auditioned like a million other people in Boston for his band and I got the gig and we played together for I guess eight or nine years starting in late '93 to '99 I think."

Chemistry is also important; sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't; The Johnny A Trio definitely has it.

"I worked with Mingo Lewis who was with Santana and Al Di Meola around '73 or '74. He was putting together a band with a good friend of mine who was an ex drummer from Frank Zappa. I got the call to go out there and I was out there for a couple of months but the chemistry just didn't feel right to me so I came back home. This band? Great players! I've got a drummer I've been working with on and off for 15 years named Marty Richards. Marty has worked with everybody from jazz greats Gary Burton to rock guys; he was in The J. Geils Band and he did play with Joe Perry of Aerosmith and a lot of other people. I have Brad Hallen on bass who was with Ministry, Sue Tedeschi, Duke Robillard; tons of people. I'm influenced and inspired by all kinds of stuff. I was a huge Beatle fan when I was a kid; all that British Invasion stuff, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Animals, The Stones and then I graduated to the British blues stuff and listened to a lot of Cream and early Clapton, Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Savoy Brown and then I got into a lot of prog-rock type of music. Gentle Giant, YES, King Crimson, Michael Urbaniak with the fusion stuff and Chick Corea, "Return to Forever," John McLaughlin Mahavishnu Orchestra; I'm obviously a huge Jeff Beck fan, he's probably my number one guy. Then I started getting into jazz and started listening to a lot of Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, Kenny Burrell; I listened to country guys too. I was a fan of James Burton and Albert Lee but I'm more of a song guy than I am a shredder guy. The music I listen to at home, most of it is not instrumental guitar players, it's mostly great songs. I'm a big fan of Gerry Rafferty, I'm a big fan of The Everly Brothers, I'm a big fan of Chris Whitley and usually songs that I pick to do instrumentals of are vocally based songs; they're usually never instrumental covers that I cover because I like arrangement, I like melody and I like form. I don't like endless riffing and a lot of that stuff but that's just me."

"My albums and my songs have elements; it's not uncommon that you'll hear elements of different genres even within a song or even in my solos," he continued. "There is definitely a big blues rock influence in the way I approach things but there is also a pop sensibility and some jazz influence in there too but not heady jazz. I like to think I'm not really a rock player, I'm kind of "Rock-ish," I'm bluesy but not really a die hard blues player, i play "Country-ish" it's not really country, I'm jazzy but not really jazz; it's just kind of an amalgamation of all these styles of people that I like who have come through me via osmosis or whatever, it's kind of like putting it in a blender and you hit puree`and hopefully it comes out sounding different from everybody else."

So, how does that translate on stage during the live shows? According to Johnny, it's rather freeing.

"Being a trio and being more open ended and the format of the type of music being more open ended, it gives me a chance to be 80 percent improvised on a show which I'm really enjoying. I'm having more fun doing this right now than I've had in years playing. I've got spirited players in the band, guys that can play off each other, guys who know how to have a musical conversation on stage; it's very dynamic and that's kind of the path I've been doing for about the last six months and what I plan to do for a while until I get bored and figure out what else to do (Laughs)."

With the Iridium show in the books, what does the future hold for him and his trio mates?

"A promoter put together a series of shows called, "Guitar Monsters" where they have three different marquee guitar players on the bill with a backup band, I'm doing a few of those. I'm heading down to Dallas, Texas to do the Dallas Guitar Festival in May. I've got a couple of more trio shows, I also have a side project called "Beck-Ola" which is a celebration of Jeff Beck's career which is a five piece band; it's kind of more of a vanity project, it's not a steady working thing, it's kind of like when we all have time I try to put a couple of shows together. It's an excellent band, we're doing 21 Jeff Beck songs from 12 different albums starting from way back to the end; fantastic musicians in that band. I'm using Steve Hunt on keyboards who has played with everybody from Allan Holdsworth to Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham, it's quite a band. I just got back from a tour of two weeks on the west coast of Canada doing Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, also Carmel, California and a couple shows in Phoenix, Arizona with this organization that I'm involved with called BANC which stands for Benevolent Artist National Charities. There are about 14 of us in the band, not necessarily all on stage at the same time but the idea of the project is to raise funds for different charities. The vision started 10 years ago, I've been involved for about three or four years. One of the visionaries was Rudy Sarzo of Quiet Riot and Whitesnake and he put it together with this person Jim Carter and the goal was to raise 10 million dollars in 10 years for different charities; children's pediatric cancer, animal rescue, etc. I've been involved like I said, for close to four years and this year we just went over the 10 million dollar mark gifted to charities and so they've reached their goal. Some of the people in this band are Bernard Flowers from The Rolling Stones, Teddy Andreadis from Guns N' Roses, some of the people from Emmylou Harris's band, Ellis Hall, all kinds of people and it's a great thing, we usually do it once a year, about half-a-dozen maybe seven shows a year and they're all done for charities."
